One of my favorite dedications belongs to the amazing Devoney Looser in her book The Making of Jane Austen. She writes:
"To my tween sons, Carl and Lowell Justice: You asked me if Jane Austen belongs among the top 100 authors of all time. When I assured you that she does, you replied, 'What is she then, like, 99?'"
I'm infinitely curious if Carl and Lowell have since read their mother's book... and changed their minds.
Looking for a bright (red) spot in your day? Read my new @lithub essay on the brilliant Oscar-nominated Jane Austen's Period Drama. A link to the film is in the piece, where I also float a theory that a #JaneAusten letter may refer to treating period pain. https://t.co/LmXvypGtGo
The Art Spy is on Goodreads' list of nonfiction reads for Women's History Month! Excited to see books by friends incl Sisterhood of Ravensbrook (Lynne Olson), Wild for Austen (Devoney Looser), Woman of War (Suzanne Cope), Paris Undercover (Matthew Goodman) https://t.co/KntAUdeqZb

From the "finding happy news where you can" and "books books books" channel: Thrilled to share I'll be talking #JaneAusten and #WildforAusten at the Unbound Book Festival in Columbia MO alongside Janet Saidi. The 2026 festival is scheduled for April 16-19.
There's so much to be sad about the destruction of The Washington Post, right now, but I'm also just feeling wistful about how much I loved our book section. Writing for our section head, John Williams, let me be the kind of writer and critic I always want to be. Threading a few:

This sort of day won't happen again in my lifetime--a #JaneAusten anniversary of this magnitude. (It's unlikely I'll make it to 2067, the 250th of her death, but I do hope others will carry on!) More about how I & others celebrated this wild time is here: https://t.co/BPTMMHnDhM

Her enduring romances, including "Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," and "Emma," made British writer Jane Austen one of the brightest names in literature – and the beloved subject of a yearlong celebration marking the 250th anniversary of her birth.
