Not a good year for @ims @IndyCar @jdouglas4 Between the allegations against Tony Donohue and the yellow shirts making the 2026 500 the worst track experience of our lives. We may never step foot on IMS again. My son is even named after a two time winner.
Between the members of our group, we have attended a combined 91 races. After more than two decades of loyal renewal, I am now seriously questioning whether I will ever return.
The problems began the moment we arrived. At 6:00 a.m. we pulled up to Gate 9A exactly as we have done for over 20 years. We were immediately turned away. We were told our NWG Handicap parking pass was valid only for exiting the property — not for entering. We were redirected to Gate 10. It took two full hours before we were finally on the grounds.
When it was time to reach our seats, we flagged down a yellow-shirt staff member and requested a cart for part of our crew. We were informed that rides must be scheduled in advance through the ticket office — a requirement we had never heard of in all our years. We made it to our seats with zero assistance from IMS.
After enjoying an outstanding race on the track, we were once again met with dismissive treatment from the safety patrol, who acted as though our presence — and that of many other fans — was nothing more than an inconvenience.
The final insult came at egress. The official IMS map clearly stated that all traffic inside the oval would exit via 16th Street, with only North 40 and NWG permitted to exit onto 30th Street. That protocol was not followed. We sat in the NWG lot for more than an hour, unable to move, while traffic from inside the oval poured north onto Hulman Boulevard. Once again, IMS failed to follow its own published plan.
Every interaction we witnessed with yellow-shirt staff on Sunday seemed designed to make the fan experience more difficult. This was not a one-off issue — it was a pattern that turned what should have been a celebratory day into the worst track experience of our lifetimes.
After 32 Indianapolis 500s and more than 20 renewals, I genuinely have to ask: why should I renew? Please explain why a long-time, high-value customer like me should continue to invest in an experience that has deteriorated to this level
