Flight Sergeant James Hyde of San Juan, Trinidad, arrived in Britain in 1942 to start his flying training,. He is seen here in 1944 with No 132 Squadron's mascot, Dingo. On this day 80 years ago, he took off for what would be his last flight. On a sortie providing air cover for the final throws of the fighting at Arnhem, his Spitfire IX was shot down, and he crashed in Elst, near Nijmegen, Holland. His lies at rest in the Jonkerbos military cemetery, he was 27.
