In April 2022 each #Wordle’s average frequency of occurrence was 16.5 per million words, skewed by the most common word BLACK (#Wordle295). Least was TROPE (#Wordle288). Majority are in the 10% most frequent 5-letter words. 6 of 30 (20%) had repeat letters.

@DebAmlen Google says psychologists have a term (orthographic neighbors) and metric (Coltheart’s N) for words produced by changing a single letter. So what to call finding high numbers of look-alike siblings in your neighborhood?

Tried P+OUND, then solved in 4. But…if I had tried F+OUND, the highest frequency word in the family, it would have been #Wordle282 in 2! Sometimes #dewordling others’ tiles does give an edge. The math? A fun bonus! #Wordle #WordleMath 5/n

So down to 47 4-letter strings, from ?ABLE to ?USTY. Since the 2nd letter could be a word ending, I narrowed in on E, O, and A. Looked for words w/o repeats. Finally tried L+EAST as first word. Oops. #Wordle #WordleMath 4/n

This produced 59 4-letter strings spawning ≥ 4 words with different 1st letters, total 277 words in all. Still too many. But tiles suggested the 2nd letter was a vowel most likely. #Wordle #WordleMath 3/n

There are 26^4=456,976 ways of arranging 4 letters. I merged all 456,976 4-letter strings with the last 4 letters of my words database, and filtered for cases where replacing the 1st letter produced at least 4 valid (but only top decile frequency) words. #Wordle #WordleMath 2/n
