The Egyptian government will restart long-delayed public-private partnership #PPP tenders for renewables-powered desalination plants this December, with the first batch including two to four facilities. Originally announced in 2022 as part of a USD 3 billion first phase to build 21 plants, the program targets 3.3 mn m³/day capacity, expanding to 8.8 mn m³/day by 2050 at a cost of USD 8 bn. Despite delays due to land, testing, and exchange rate challenges, the same 17 prequalified consortiums remain eligible to bid. Egypt currently operates 125 plants with 1.3 mn m³/day capacity, while additional projects—including a USD 300 mn Suez Canal Economic Zone @sczoneegy plant and a new #MoU with Japan’s Mizuha on air-to-water generation—signal a broader push to diversify water supply and integrate sustainable technologies.
