Our response to calls for ‘compassionate collecting’ that amounted to an end to natural history field research.
‘Specimen collection is essential for modern science’ with 100+ authors led by Berkeley scientists - with Michael Nachman in the lead

The fantastic @dfbvaz explaining the title of his talk ‘Don’t want to be your bony wrench’ is based on him finding a fish bone 🦴 shaped like a wrench 🔧 when listening to @foofighters ‘Monkey Wrench’ album - maybe Dave Grohl can reach out to his biggest fan #ipfc2023#ipfc11

I want to take a moment to acknowledge international students:
The constant worry & energy spent working on immigration documents
Being excluded from funding opportunities valued for postdoc & faculty positions
And the emotional toll of being away from family
Cutting off all communication to a population of 2.2 million is unacceptable. Journalists, medical professionals, humanitarian efforts, and innocents are all endangered.
I do not know how such an act can be defended. The United States has historically denounced this practice.
Two million people. Half children. Starved. Bombed. Cut from communication.
Have those facilitating this thought much about the future this leaves us? No.
Some may dismiss a ceasefire as naïve or worse. Yet who has a plan for what follows this destruction? What do we call that?
Humans can only survive without water for about 3 days. Gaza has run dry.
The blockade on water, food, and electricity is an indiscriminate, collective punishment and a crime.
It is cruel and unjust. To save millions of people in Gaza - nearly half children - it must end. Now.
The population of Gaza is about 2 million. Nearly half are children.
Millions of innocent people cannot be made to pay for Hamas’ horror.
Collective punishment is a war crime. So are blockades to food and water.
We cannot allow dehumanization to descend into further atrocity.

Here’s what went down: we just won a clean 45 day gov extension, stripped GOP’s earlier 30% cuts to Social Security admin etc, staved off last minute anti-immigrant hijinks, and averted shutdown (for now).
People will get paychecks and MTG threw a tantrum on the way out. Win-win
