The "Blitz Spirit" is an interesting question, one "contributor" remarked that Eden was quite right to suggest the targeted killing of German civilians because in fact the London Blitz HAD been catastrophic for morale and the "Blitz Spirit" was just made up propaganda.

In fact the truth is far more interesting !

The British government (as were all Governments in likelyhood) terrified pre-war of the effects of a really huge bombing campaign on cities. They had genuine fears that mass hysteria might occur, that the entire population might turn against them and that the rich, and poorest would revolt (they considered them the most suceptible to habouring foreign sympathies).

None of this actually happened, however, and nobody was more surprised than our own government. One of the worst things was in fact how little confidence they had in the British people to stand up to raids.

Large mental health clinics were built around London, forseeing the mass transformation of the population into the mentally infirm overnight. In fact, very little of the sort occured.

The Blitz propaganda was made so strong because our own government had little hope for their own people to stand it, not because they actually turned out to need it.

Incredibly, suicide rates in England fell by 30% (this trend is not particular to the British). Whilst obviously it can be said that service men in action were obviously too otherwise concerned to have such thoughts, the rates among women at home fell too.

Modern critiques of the Blitz spirit for the most part agree that it WAS a real phenomenon, and that the attacks did not break the national spirit, they do suggest however that the main element which really wasnt true at all, was the insistence that it was "British" stiff upper lip which caused this, when, it is of course a natural human societal reaction to external danger, and is present in all normally constructued nations.

Films such as "Britain Can Take it" were not made to prop up home morale, it was meant for the Americans to help ensure they carried on supporing us. Hence why it was narrated by an American.

The only time I have seen evidence of (in the west) of area bombing of cities having a serious impact on morale to the degree where confidence in the leadership turned to anger, is in recorded conversations between Germans, who said that in Berlin near the end of the war in 1944 when the German cities were literally being wiped off the face of the planet that for the first time anti-Hitler graffiti was visible painted on buildings on the streets.
