Growing up, I was profoundly influenced by several gigantic men—some dead, some alive—through their audio recordings.

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, James Philip, Eric Alexander, John F. MacArthur, R.C. Sproul, Sinclair Ferguson . . . as well as local figures from the church movement to which my family belonged.

These men were/are preachers, teachers, evangelists . . . They made sense of scripture, opening up a whole world of invigorating truth, whilst appealing to the heart. I binge-listened to them for innumerable hours, and it was spiritual rocket fuel. It changed me.

But there are a few things about this that have been troubling me for some time now.

First, there is a strange lack of new gift in the emerging generation. It is unusual for an era to be so low on these sorts of men. But as the older ones pass on, new talent of similar calibre is oddly scarce.

Second, those in my generation who are gifted communicators are pursuing politics and political commentary. The young talkers and analysts are saying far more about Donald Trump than Jesus Christ.

Third, when it comes to the practice of “binge-listening for innumerable hours” among Christians today, that binge-listening is overwhelmingly related to aforementioned political and social content.

Does this trend concern anyone else?

Who are the giants? Where are their platforms? And where is the appetite for the word from God?

We should all be praying about this—that God would fill the gap until it’s bursting.
