It is never too late to reinvent your career and your life.

At 47, Abigail Seymour believed she might be too old to start an entirely new profession. More than a decade later, she leads her own bilingual, all-women law firm.

Seymour had already lived several distinct chapters. She studied photography at New York University, moved to Spain to teach English, walked 485 miles (781 kilometers) across the country on the Camino de Santiago, raised two children, and built a photography business in North Carolina.

Yet photography never felt like her true calling.

She had once considered becoming a lawyer but doubted she could pass the bar. Years later, while working at a nonprofit and assisting an immigration attorney, the idea resurfaced.

“You should do it,” the attorney told her.

Seymour enrolled in law school at 47.

The path proved difficult. Her sister died during her first year, and Seymour nearly withdrew while managing grief, motherhood, and rigorous classes filled mostly with younger students.

She persevered, graduated, and then failed the bar exam twice.

After the second failure, she visited her therapist expecting permission to quit. Instead, he said, “Everything you want is on the other side of comfort.”

On her third attempt, she passed.

Seymour later founded Camino Law, a bilingual family law firm that now employs seven women. She wanted to build a practice that served women in a different way and provided the kind of legal experience she believed was lacking.
