Multiple cases of sexual assault and human trafficking have been dismissed in Ontario since December because the federal government has not hired enough judges and judicial vacancies are leading to significant delays in cases.
The Supreme Court has said cases in Superior Court must be heard within 30 months, otherwise, they must be tossed for violating an accused person’s right to a trial within a reasonable time.
The chief justice of Canada warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year that this exact scenario would happen if the government didn’t move more quickly.
