Now Gianni Infantino wants to create FIFA Forward Enterprise, a new subsidiary that takes every money-making activity (broadcast rights, sponsorship, ticketing, licensing, the entire operational delivery of the World Cup and every other FIFA tournament) and parks it inside one commercial vehicle valued at twenty billion dollars by JPMorgan. Then he sells up to twenty percent of that vehicle to private investors, led by people connected to the Trump family, for roughly 4.2 billion dollars.

On paper they keep majority ownership. On paper the investors have no vote in the Congress, no seat on sporting decisions, no power over the calendar or the rules. On paper FIFA “still governs football.” That is the legal architecture they are selling. It is also the same architecture every corrupt structure in history has used: create a clean-looking subsidiary, keep the formal control, and let the money and the relationships do the real work.

I have seen this movie. We all have. In 2015 the United States Department of Justice dropped a 47-count indictment on FIFA executives for a twenty-four-year racketeering conspiracy. More than 150 million dollars in bribes. Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer turning CONCACAF into a personal bank. Vote-buying for World Cups. The ISL scandal before that. Sepp Blatter’s entire era. They arrested people in a Zurich hotel while the Congress was about to start. Blatter was forced out. Infantino arrived as the great reformer.

Ten years later the great reformer is offering federations forty million dollars each if they vote yes to putting private capital inside the commercial heart of the World Cup, and threatening them with far less if they vote no. He calls it “an opportunity, not an obligation.” He calls it democracy. He calls it development funding for the little nations.

I played for France. I won the World Cup. I know exactly what that trophy means on the pitch and what it means in the stands. It is not a balance-sheet item for long-term investors who have never felt a ball at their feet under pressure. It is not a vehicle for people who talk about “unlocking value” while the players’ bodies are already breaking under the calendar these same administrators keep expanding.

They will say the investors have no control. They said the same things about the old commercial partners who were paying bribes. Soft power does not need a board seat. Once the money is in, the pressure starts. More tournaments. More teams. More commercial decisions dressed up as sporting ones. The same pattern, just with better lawyers and a more modern pitch deck.

I am not interested in their legal distinctions. I am not interested in their “minority non-controlling stake” language. The World Cup is not theirs to restructure for capital. It belongs to the game. It belongs to the people who actually play it and the people who actually live it. Anyone who needs to sell pieces of it to prove they are developing football has already admitted they do not understand the thing they claim to protect.

This is not reform. This is the latest version of the same old FIFA. And some of us are done pretending otherwise.
