Gradey showing more and more the offensive upside. Can do a LOT, building off his shooting threat.
RJ showing some of his creation limitations, as teams scout him and hone in on him more and more. Raps don't really have another option right now, need him to adjust.
@patrickzburner You know what exaggerating is though, right? It's not saying something completely untrue. Which is what he did.
There are actual dumb people who believe these conspiracies and Walder with his following shouldn't be feeding that.
@BlakeMurphyODC I think Ochai taking 6 above the break threes in a game when he'd taken a total of 9 in the previous 8 games is notable, and not a random outcome of the scheme. It sure looked to me like he was up above the break more than usual. Agreed, not tanking, but not trying to win either.
Corner. Merchant.
And they've leaned into it this year, for the most part.
This SAC game was weird, he was above the break all game. Subtle "development over wins" (tanking) move? He hit a couple, which is good, but he missed more, which helps with the whole losing thing.
Ochai historically has been a pretty great corner shooter.
Career corner 3βs: 44.7%
Non-corner 3βs: 23%
Feels like his poor shooting in Toronto (at first) from that spot was an aberration.
@BlakeMurphyODC The tanking comment is tongue in cheek (it really is development stuff I imagine) but he was absolutely floating above the break way more in this game. No idea what schematic advantage there was to that but am open to suggestions!
Smaller point - Gradey did seem out of rhythm, and you can point to the foul trouble causing that. I would argue foul trouble does not cause that - sitting a guy because he has fouls causes that. Let your players foul out themselves. Icing your shooter doesn't help anything.
I thought a lot of last night's game was fun again. Raps ran out of steam late, injuries piled up a bit, Gradey and RJ finally started to show some of their limitations in these bigger roles (which was inevitable, but the growth they've shown there is still very exciting).
Davion and Shead are both defensive hounds on the ball, but both also have a bit of a habit of getting back cut or losing their guy on the perimeter when off the ball. Will be interesting to see how that develops as the season progresses.
Jak and Ochai have the worst defensive splits, which maybe tells you how much noise there is in this...
But leaving that aside: Ja'Kobe has the best overall net rating swing on the team (+24 PPC; +17 offence, -7 defence). That's a good sign for a rookie no matter the context!
Very early, so a lot of context noise in these, but some interesting things to pop out of on/offs early on:
Gradey's offensive rating swing is 2nd on the team - to Ja'Kobe (small sample)!
Jak is right behind them - a screener does a lot, even when shooting is at a premium!
Scottie has the worst offensive split on the team - I think largely due to the bench groups he got saddled with when healthy, and missing IQ's shooting beside him with the starters.
Mogbo has by far the best defensive split on the team (23 PPC better on than off).
