The expectations were placed on Tareque Rahman to ‘restore the balance’, undo the Interim Government and continue like the Monsoon Uprising never happened. The stenographers were now busy with Op-Eds, directed at the Bangladeshi PM, to reconcile with the Awami League, bring them back into the political realm and make their mildly inconvenient legacy of mass murder, torture, stolen elections and repression go away.

It should be the Bangladesh govt taking legal action against this harmful account, one of the biggest sources of cross-border disinformation, constantly pushing anti-Bangladesh propaganda, spreading communal hatred and fueling hostility across the border.

If the Bangladesh govt wants to act, there are plenty of reasonable charges that could be brought against its operator, from spreading hate and false information to engaging in anti-Bangladesh activities and propaganda. The handle has peddled at least 500 fake and misleading claims and hundreds of pieces of propaganda over the years.

Shock, denial, delusion

“When first confronted with the Uprising in 2024 that led to Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, India’s response was shock and denial which eventually led to delusion, while the rest of the world rushed to engage with the new Bangladesh. The loud ecosystem of the Indian media soon termed the student-led Uprising an “Islamist/Fundamentalist” takeover, choosing instead to double down on its support for Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League, even as multiple credible reports came out documenting crimes against humanity, mass murder, a system of enforced disappearances and repression by the Awami League Government.”

On August 25, 2026, I spoke on the steps of New York City Hall alongside clergy, community leaders and civil rights advocates at a press conference demanding that Madison Square Garden cancel the August 29 appearance of Mohan Bhagwat, chief of India's RSS.

Brad Lander — former New York City Comptroller and the Democratic nominee for New York's 10th congressional district, which includes City Hall — also spoke, and condemned the RSS.

The event was convened by a coalition of forty-eight organizations including Hindus for Human Rights, Sikh Coalition, Indian American Muslim Council, Dalit Solidarity Forum, Save America From Hindutva, Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, Rabbis for Ceasefire, the New York Sikh Council, the Movement for Black Lives, CAIR-NY and DRUM.

Inside City Hall at the same hour, Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked about the rally for the first time. He said the rise of Hindu nationalism has been incredibly troubling and that he finds himself in deep opposition to it. Asked directly whether the event should be canceled, he said he doesn't support the rally, but doesn't know whether the city has jurisdiction over a private event.

These are my remarks. They cover the 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden and the manifesto the RSS's guru published that same year, the assassination of Gandhi and the ban that followed, a century of pogroms, the Western fascists the movement has courted from its origins to the present day, and the euphemism the RSS is using to bring its chief to the most famous stage in America.
