Animal rights activists were campaigning for putting an end to harassing elephants🐘 in the name of culture & religion for quite some time now.

They argued it's time for the Buddhist establishment to stop using elephants as a showpiece & it is against the core principles of Buddhism as well.

But the Buddhist religious establishment & Sinhala Buddhists chauvinist groups created a massive resistance against this idea.

They accused animal rights activists are trying to harm the goodwill of the establishment & acting on behalf of other religious establishments.

Muthu Raja's incident unmasked this whole thing to the world.
