The Hachiko team visited the Ukrainian village of Cherkas'ki Tyshky outside Kharkiv. Before Russian occupation, 200 dogs lived here. Only 28 dogs survived. We brought food and medicine for residents here caring for them.
A "dove release" at a wedding or funeral is a death sentence for the birds.
The white "doves" sold for releases aren't doves. They're domestic white pigeons bred to be small and pretty, with no survival skills outside a coop.
The cheaper DIY versions (Ringneck Doves, King Pigeons) can't even find their way home. Nearly all of them die within days.
Even professional releases with trained homing pigeons lose birds every time. Hawks take them in the air. Cars hit them when they land exhausted. They collide with windows. There are lots of ways it can go sideways for them.
Rehabbers pull them in with broken wings, raging trichomoniasis, and bodies so emaciated they can't stand. One described a release pigeon whose throat infection had hardened so completely it distorted the shape of his skull.
There is no version of this where the birds "fly away and live happily ever after." That's the marketing. The reality is a domestic animal traumatized or killed for a 15-second photo.
🆘🆘 CELINA (ID 252316), 4 YO, FEMALE – IN QUEENS ACC - came into the shelter as an owner surrender on 5/5/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow. 🆘🆘 😿 😿 😿 😿
➡️TBD 5/30/26
➡️ 🆘🆘 1ST Chance on Emergency Placement List – VERY URGENT – 🆘🆘 😱🔥🔥😱
➡️ 24 DAYS IN SHELTER – TOO LONG – TIME IS RUNNING OUT
➡️ CELINA IS ON THE EPL FOR BEHAVIORAL REASONS -She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression. “Deteriorating in Adoptions Room” means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥
At the time of assessment, Celina did not tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is a friendly and affectionate lap cat, following her family around, and will be very cuddly and hopping on shoulders once she warms up to her people, in a home environment - the behaviors are considered to be shelter specific, and she would make a great pet but struggles in shelter. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience, willing to work with a cat to help them adjust and settle in. Celina is a gorgeous tabby girl with a playful spirit, bright personality, and lots of love waiting beneath the surface. ✨🐾 Shelter life has been overwhelming for her, so she's still learning to feel safe here. But according to her previous family, once Celina settles into a home, she transforms into an affectionate cuddle bug who follows her people around, hops onto shoulders, and happily curls up as a lap cat. This lively girl loves toys, activities, and interactive play, and she's looking for a patient, cat-savvy adopter who will give her the time and understanding she needs to blossom again. With a little patience, Celina promises to reward her future person with companionship, affection, and plenty of personality. If you're ready to help a sensitive girl rediscover her confidence, Celina could be your perfect match. 🩷 ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻
NEEDS OUT OF SHELTER ASAP –

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar said that the international community "didn't really do its job" and failed to "guarantee Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence" under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.
"Now we need a peace agreement with real guarantees, security guarantees. I think it's crucial for Ukraine as well," he added.
On May 14, russia murdered 24-year-old English teacher Maryna, her boyfriend Yuriy, and their dog Dalma, who previously survived shelling on the front and finally found a loving home💔
russian war criminals destroyed that home and this kind family — like they always do🧵
I will never forgive Donald Trump for buying time for Russia to carry out war and genocide in Ukraine.
He treated the demands of a war criminal as legitimate and blamed the victim.
The consequences will be felt for generations
President Zelenskyy responds to JD Vance, who called ending aid to Ukraine “one of the proudest” achievements of the Trump administration:
“If the Vice President is proud that he is not helping us, it means that he is helping Russians,” Zelensky told Newsmax.
