This journey that began at Christmas in 2005 under the name flat-it type foundry is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Looking back, there were not even web fonts at the time, and even YouTube itself had only just been born. The number of type designers was only a fraction of what it is today—perhaps even one-thousandth.
In my twenties then, I stepped into this world recklessly and without fear, thinking only, “Somehow, I’ll find a way to make a living.”
Over these 20 years, our fonts have been used not only in publications, films, television broadcasts, and games, but also on clothing, in station infographics, and on food packaging—truly in all kinds of places. Every time I come across them, my heart still leaps with joy. That feeling has not changed at all since the day in 2005 when I first saw a font I had designed being used in the real world.
To everyone who has supported our type design over these twenty years, and to each and every customer who has purchased and used our fonts, I would like to express my deepest gratitude.
Finally, I would like to close with one of my favorite lines from the film Dead Poets Society:
"Medicine, law, business, engineering—these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life, but poetry, beauty, romance, love—these are what we stay alive for."
— Dead Poets Society
