Susan Sarkauskas, Steve Zalusky and Kevin Schmit at the Dirksen Federal Building, holding up the notice certifying a 15-0 union vote VICTORY for the creation of the Daily Herald News Guild!!!
Management refused to voluntarily recognize us even though EVERY union eligible person signed a union card. They said everyone needed the right to vote.
Well, be careful what you wish for. We won our vote 15-0 and are officially the Daily Herald News Guild!!!
Want to know why we're organizing? Eight rounds of buyouts/layoffs in the last 10 years. Then a ninth in August, less than two months after we were purchased by the Tribune.
Our fight for recognition of our union continues. Please fill out the letter and send it to management to support us! #solidarity

🚨Journalists at the Daily Herald in Illinois are unionizing after experiencing eight rounds of buyouts and layoffs over the past 10 years, culminating with the dismissal of 12 workers earlier this month. Give them a follow at @dhnewsguild.
My testimonial on behalf of the new, long overdue @dhnewsguild (press release and website just launched): “The local journalism we do can’t be outsourced. It can’t be AI-generated. It’s done by getting out into the community and talking to people.”
