I had the opportunity to speak with MPR News about how recent immigration enforcement activity is affecting Muslim families during the blessed month of Ramadan here in Minneapolis. Ramadan is meant to be a time of peace, prayer, and community gathering, yet many families are experiencing fear, uncertainty, and reduced attendance at mosques. As faith leaders, our role is to calm hearts, support our community, and remind people that compassion, dignity, and human respect must remain at the center of our society, especially during a sacred time.

We are Somalis, and we know the history of our country. All Somalis were deeply affected by the harsh and oppressive military regime of Siad Barre.

After the government was overthrown by armed Rebels groups —backed by foreign actors, including rebels from the North—those groups lacked the capacity to govern. Instead, they turned on one another, plunging Somalia into civil war and dividing its people.

We are still dealing with the devastating consequences of that period today.
