A Somali businessman has offered FIFA referee Omar Artan $100,000 to compensate for the loss of earning he would have made officiating the World Cup.

Official referees at the World Cup earn approximately $50,000 to 75,000.

I am deeply disappointed by the news that Omar Artan, Africa’s finest referee and one of the best in the world, may be unable to officiate at the FIFA World Cup due to visa-related circumstances.

Omar has earned his place through talent, hard work, professionalism, and integrity. Having officiated at the highest levels of African and international football, his credentials speak for themselves.

He represents not only Somalia, but also the aspirations of millions of young Africans who believe excellence should be recognized on the world stage.

I remain hopeful that a solution can be found. Football is at its best when it brings people together and celebrates merit, inclusion, and opportunity.

Recently, I read The Afghanistan Papers: A Secret History of the War by Craig Whitlock, and one passage struck me as particularly relevant to #Somalia today. Reflecting on the corruption in Afghansgant Whitlock cites a powerful analogy: “Petty corruption is like skin cancer; there are ways to deal with it and you’ll probably be just fine. Corruption within ministries, higher level, is like colon cancer; it’s worse, but if you catch it in time, you’re probably okay. Kleptocracy, however, is like brain cancer; it’s fatal.”

Competing ideas of political morality.

Aristotelian Moralism: For Aristotle, the purpose of politics is to cultivate moral virtue among citizens and design a legal system that supports noble actions. The statesman is expected to meet high moral standards and prioritize justice.

Machiavellian Realism/Amoralism: Niccolò Machiavelli famously argued that a ruler must prioritize the maintenance of power and the stability of the state, often requiring actions that would be considered immoral in private life (acting "against faith, against charity, against humanity, and against religion").
