And religion provides us with an ideal figure to be and that gives us the sense of purpose to be the ideal.
Same is the case with the atheist,they also create their own ideals. For instance,Socrates asks us to do self mastery and Friedrich Nietzsche to be an ubermensch.

Death itself may not give you a meaning, the story you tell yourself about your death, before your death, at the time of your death is where the meaning comes from. That's why the concept of religion comes from all the religious talks about the after death.
