And right now, Puntland is not using it as one.

@NadeefSO@hodansomali My old tweet isn’t the indictment you think it is.
It’s an indictment of a political class that has spent decades making people question whether the current arrangement is worth preserving.
The funniest part is that some people think Puntlanders need the UAE or Israel to tell them to defend Puntland’s autonomy.
No.
Decades of experience with federal overreach did that.
Puntland First.
The UAE/Israeli Zionist backed "Puntland First" project represents the next phase of Somalia's separatist movement.
The project goal is to move Puntland from semi-autonomous status toward full statehood, deepen alignment with Somaliland, and ultimately legitimize Somaliland's claim to independence through mutual recognition.
The movement is not about local politics or strengthening PL within the federal system of Somalia.
It’s a model that favors fragmented, weak states over unified and sovereign ones. Because a divided Somalia is far easier to influence economically, politically, and militarily than a strong, united nation.
Exactly what Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv would benefit from - greater leverage over the Horn of Africa's strategic trade corridors, ports, security architecture, and natural resources.
Deni: “anu Xamar baan ku dhashay, ku koray, ku barbaaray. Rag baa halkaa (halkaa = Puntland) i geeyay.” Xanuunkan (nostalgia coupled with pathological altruism) si sahlan loogama bogsado, haduuse helo reer Puntland bartay cilmiga nafsiga way caawin karaan (I think).
For Puntland, the future of democracy should not be measured only by the number of parties that exist, but by the quality of the institutions those parties become. The test is not whether politics becomes louder. The test is whether it becomes more coherent, more disciplined, and more capable of preserving Puntland’s freedom to choose.

Autonomy is not just a goal; it’s a strategic necessity. @MustafeGuufe , chairman of @PuntlandFirstHQ, unveils a new defense framework to shield #Puntland’s future from external coercion. Quiet strength over loud rhetoric.
God bless United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪
Turkey and Qatar moved zero inches to assist the Puntland Defense Forces while Puntland fought ISIS elements in the mountains. They watched from the sidelines as Puntland carried the burden of a war they helped enable elsewhere. That record matters.
Some individuals who label themselves “Puntlanders” mistakenly believe clan alignment alone grants them political authority or legitimacy. It does not. Puntland is defined by institutions, law, and responsibility, not by slogans or tribal proximity.
We are not confused about who our allies are, and we are not confused about who our adversaries are. An adversary is anyone who aided terrorists operating in Puntland’s territory. An adversary is anyone who consistently works to undermine Puntland’s sovereignty. An adversary is anyone who believes Puntland can be dictated to, managed remotely, or treated as a subordinate province or, worse, an Ottoman style dependency.
Under the 2012 constitution, which Puntland itself authored and ratified, Puntland retains the legal and political authority to enter into agreements it deems necessary for its security and survival. That authority is not granted by Mogadishu, nor can it be revoked by external actors. If circumstances evolve and frameworks are challenged, Puntland will adapt accordingly. Strategic flexibility is not weakness. It is statecraft.
Unity cannot be manufactured through intimidation, rhetoric, or repetition. It must be voluntary, functional, and mutually respectful. Those who believe that shouting “unity” can substitute for legitimacy or governance are living in the past.
Reality will decide the outcome. History always does.
Puntland has been putting out its own fires precisely because the federal system can’t. That’s the issue.
What happens in Mogadishu affects us not by choice, but by imposed vulnerability.
If the umbilical cord only transfers instability, then responsible leadership requires exploring alternatives; including a clean, planned separation. Puntland can’t be forever tied to a centre that can’t secure itself.
When I wrote those words months ago, I hoped we’d reach this moment.
Today, #Puntland and #Somaliland have chosen dialogue over division; a brave act of maturity and vision.
May this spirit of cooperation in security and development guide our people toward lasting peace and prosperity.
