Solid presentation by Jefferies on the evolution of equity taxation in India, alongside a global comparison of capital gains tax and STT.
The data makes it obvious: India’s current tax framework on equities is an outlier. High time this anomaly gets rationalized.
Dear FM Madam @nsitharaman ji,
I am hearing that you are finally considering some rectifications in the Capital Markets. Let me share my suggestions once again.
- Abolish LTCG (Please remember that investors are investing their post income tax capital). So you need to incentivize long term patient capital.
- Quadruple Taxation should be Abolished in Capital Markets (Income Tax + STT on Buy + Capital Gains on Sell + STT on Sell)
- Bring Capital Gains from Markets in Rebate under Section 87A. This will ensure that people who only have income from stock markets can also get the full benefit upto 12 Lakh.
- FIIs lose a lot due to currency. Many invested at ₹70 a dollar and today they are exiting at ₹95 a dollar. They are taxed, even though they lose due to currency depreciation. We need to somehow ensure that they get taxed only on Dollar Terms. We need a think tank to ensure that they are playing on level field.
I sincerely hope that the Government rolls back on LTCG which was introduced in 2018 (totally unnecessary).
If you implement above steps, your STT & STCG collection will eventually hit new highs and it's a WIN-WIN.
I hope every investor reading this would share widely and ensure that FM Madam takes necessary steps !!

India's Capital Markets Taxation: The Big Voices Are Speaking Up
Vallabh Bhanshali — Co-founder, Enam Group | 19 October 2026
“I think it should never have been there. And if there is no one in the world taxing FIIs the way we are doing, why should we have been doing it?”
Samir Arora — Founder, Helios Capital | 23 October 2026
“How can taxes not matter?” Arora argued that India competes with other markets for global capital and that lower taxation could improve India's attractiveness. He questioned why India should maintain taxes that put foreign investors at a disadvantage relative to other destinations.
Ajit Dayal — Founder, Quantum Advisors | October 2026
“I can state with confidence that, in 36 years of interaction with FPIs, we have never seen such dismay.”
Akash Prakash — Veteran investor, Amansa Capital | October 2026
“I have been investing in Indian equities for over 30 years. Rarely have I seen foreign sentiment this bad. All allocators are upset about the capital gains tax”
Ketan Dalal — Founder, Katalyst Advisors | 19 October 2026
“One of the greatest disadvantages ... foreign portfolio investors face is that the taxation of capital gains is in rupee terms and not in dollar terms.”
Soumya Kanti Ghosh — Group Chief Economic Adviser, SBI | 12 October 2026

SBI's Ecowrap recommended examining the abolition of long-term capital gains tax on equity, alongside extending the holding period to two or three years. Its argument focuses on attracting more stable capital and improving policy predictability.
Nilesh Shah — MD, Kotak Mahindra AMC | 13–16 October 2026
“Undoubtedly, the dual taxation by way of STT as well as capital gain is something which has bothered investors both globally as well as locally.”
What is your view?
LTCG reforms are suddenly appearing in every news outlet and in every WhatsApp group!
Yes, of course, I would also love to see that, but I have zero confidence!
You usually never kill your cash cows!
Tax paying 3% population is the bread and butter and the big fat cash cows!
Nirmala Sitharaman may not have to worry about the LTCG debate for a while.
With the ongoing relentless correction most indices are struggling to hold any gains in this sea of red 🔻. Long term profits have already been diluted for most people.
The tax question can wait until there is something left to tax.
Ab gain hi nahi bacha, toh tax kis cheez pe lagayenge? 😇🤦♂️
@narendramodi ji, it's been more than 2 years now, stock market index is still at the same level. Your ministers hurts investor community by saying stock investing income as easy money. Even FD return will be higher. You are pushing us to invest outside India. It's high time now.
@vbomkara@vbomkara , Participants in the stock market and mutual funds make up a minuscule percentage of Indian voters. That's why the government isn't taking care of us. A very brutal fact.
What a great time for the Indian government to unleash some bold reforms.
Global AI enthusiasm is being questioned. FII positioning in India is >decade low. Investor frustration is at its peak. Valuations have corrected. Global capital is looking for alternatives, and confidence in India needs a boost.
Imagine what bold reforms, policy stability, lower regulatory uncertainty and a strong pro-investment message could do at this moment.
Sometimes, the biggest opportunities come when expectations are at their lowest.
India doesn't need more promises. It needs bold action. And the timing couldn't be better.
A global investor shared this with me after the recent policy adjustments.
The issue is not the capital we lose, but the decline in confidence in India that causes greater harm. Clear policy predictability is imperative for investors.
Worst ever paid AI subscription is @abacusai , all videos over the youtube seems a paid promotion. Don't burn money. It looks cheap with its plan, but output is very bad even free online model can generate better. It is utilising too much credits for worst and tiny output.
@dealztrendz It's a new-age scheme: first collect reviews, then change the product. Even the worst products inherit the old reviews and ratings. This re-usage of @amazon links has surfaced again. How does a brush have reviews for a charger
