To be successful in trading is not about making money.
It is about 'Consistently' making money.
Consistency is the Key.

The Spiritual Trader -
So, what is spirituality after all and how can it be used in trading?
I was listening to a podcast in which I heard this beautiful definition of spirituality — Spirituality is the “ritual of the spirit”
A person who starts on this path, questions everything.
Why are we here on this planet? From where we have come and where will we go?
Spirituality gives a sense of positivity, humbleness, compassion and well-being.
People who follow spirituality, usually benefit a lot from these –
Meditation
Mindfulness
Yoga
Breathwork
Spending time in nature
Being comfortable alone
Acceptance of the un-controllable
All these are very big topics but let’s try to understand them briefly so that we can know how to apply them in our life to transform our trading journeys –
Meditation — Meditation is a practice in which we use mental and physical techniques to clear the focus of the mind which helps us to reduce stress, anxiety.
There are many forms of meditations like walking meditation where we focus on our breathing and walking consciously in nature. It is really helpful in bringing the stress levels down.
Then there is a body scan meditation where we focus on each part of the body one by one and enhance our mindfulness.
There is also mantra meditation, which I personally do, which involves repeating a sacred sound or word which we can chant out loud or whisper silently to ourselves.
Now how can this help us in our trading?
Trading is a stressful job, don’t be fooled by the influencers who post about trading off the beaches while they are on vacation.
Trading does require full focus and is best done in a relaxed state of mind. If we are not able to focus and keep ourselves calm, we will be carried away by our emotions easily and take irrational decisions while trading which can often result into huge blunders.
I have seen many traders who -
Could not control their emotions and often were stressed about their trades.
Got into over trading and ended up taking huge position sizes on a single day and blew away their entire capital in a matter of days.
That’s why it is suggested to meditate first thing in the morning so that we can work calmly for the rest of the day.
Mindfulness — Mindfulness also helps is reducing stress as it is the art of doing each and everything with focus in it. We do everything mindfully. We think about doing everything and therefore, our decisions are much sorted and calculated.
In trading, we would have noticed that we sometimes take a position which we never intended or planned to, but we just took it out of FOMO, or just because any other big trader or investor was taking a position in it. We regret it later when the stock does not give us the desired result and we end up losing money on it most of the times.
It happens because we usually don’t trade mindfully. We just trade out of greed and fear.
Yoga — Now you must be thinking what has yoga got to do with trading??
Yoga is much more than just bending or stretching the body. Yoga also helps to reduce the stress a lot and in fact, if we look at the physical benefit of yoga, we will realize that it helps us as a trader a lot.
We as traders end up sitting entire day in front of the computer, analyzing stocks, checking charts, finding new stocks, watching learning content or while reading books.
If we are not physically active, our health will end up taking the toll and what use is any skill or any wealth of this world if we don’t have the health to enjoy it??
Spending time in nature — Since mindfulness and meditation have already been discussed, let’s skip going into the details of breathwork and look at the topic of spending time in nature.
We all know by now that spending time in nature has many benefits like improving our physical health, mental health and overall emotional well-being. It has become even more important these days to spend time in nature as we as a generation, are constantly on our phones. We are sitting most of the times in front of our computers and it drains energy out of us.
The benefit of swing and long-term trading is that we can actually spend time away from the screen. We don’t have to constantly stare at the screens and watch the market tick-by-tick. We can scan the stocks on the weekend and just check the markets for 10–15 minutes during the live market hours to see if we need to execute a trade or not. We can use alerts on the charting website to take care of that too.
We can use the spare time to spend that extra time in nature, read a book at a local park or just go for a walk.
Most of the times during the market hours, I am often sitting in my neighborhood park, reading a book. If feels so rejuvenating and relaxing!
Being comfortable alone- Being a trader is a lonely job. We don’t usually need a team to be a trader, nor do we need to work under a boss. A trader usually spends most of his/her time alone, sitting in front of the computer, analyzing stocks and watching charts for a significant amount of time. Yes, we don’t need to sit in front of the computer once we have understood the process and taken position in our selected stocks, but we need to spend a lot of time during the learning phase.
Another issue is, unfortunately, trading is still not seen as a legitimate business in our society and most of the traders hide their profession from others. The times are changing and now trading is getting the recognition that it deserves, but still, there are a lot of traders out there who don’t even let their dear ones or family members know that they are trading.
If they win, the celebrate alone, if they lose, they try to hide their feelings.
A trader needs to learn how to manage his/her emotions alone and be stable and calm in all conditions. This is where spirituality helps a lot.
Acceptance of the un-controllable — Trading helps us to realize this eternal truth that what we do is in our control, the outcome is not.
If we understand this simple thing early on in life, we would be in a much better position. We usually end up complaining about all the things that are not in our control.
We need feedback in anything we do and trading gives us the quickest feedback. If we traded well and followed our plan and did not let emotions enter into our head, we get rewarded. If we get carried away by our emotions and end up breaking our own trading rules, we get punished by the markets almost immediately.
With time, we understand the importance of just focusing on the action which is our
dharma
or duty of executing the trades without the end result in mind.
As traders, we just need to execute one trade after the other and not let the un-controllable future outcome affect our next decision.
If we took a trade, followed our plan and it gave us profit. Just execute the next trade.
If we took a trade, followed our plan and it gave us a loss. Just execute the next trade.
It’s that simple, but not easy to follow and sometimes takes years to realize that we don’t need to think about the outcome and just focus on the action.
