Some days are long, some cases are brutal but trauma surgery reminds me exactly why I chose surgery. Fast decisions, teamwork under pressure, and the chance to make a difference when seconds matter. Wouldn’t trade this calling for anything🙏❤️
When placing lines, I often see residents twisting and contorting themselves into awkward positions in order to be able to poke with their R hand.
Instead: Learn to use your LEFT hand when it's easier.
Learning to poke L handed🤚is easier than you think. You'll be 😀 later .
Congratulations to all that have matched into Surgery.
Fate has rewarded your many years of hard work with the opportunity to obtain training that is available only to a very few. Countless people would trade places with you in a second.
Conduct yourselves accordingly. 💪
This needed to be said. Not every hospital has a robot, and us residents need to be ready for all settings - trauma, community, global. We need balance, not replacement.
I love operating on a robot. But it’s emotional seeing how much laparoscopy we’re losing in training.
💬 Viewpoint: Robotic surgery has rapidly become the default platform in US surgical training, but widespread adoption may erode core laparoscopic skills essential for safe, adaptable care.

Absolutely fantastic @OhioStateSurg Grand Rounds by University of Arizona Surgical Oncology Division Chief Dr. Taylor Riall. Had to make collages to do justice and capture her top 10 lessons! 👏 @UofAZSurgery

"Can I have 5 minutes of your time?" = "Can I have 28 minutes of your time?"
It take 23 minutes to regain your focus after being interrupted from a skilled task.
Be mindful of your attention and other's.
Don’t talk about negative things, because the more you speak of them, the more power you give them. Speak of hope, speak of strength, speak of possibility what you focus on, grows.
Does surgical residency really need to be 5 years? 🤔
In our recent study of senior residents, skills improved with PGY—except in Nissen fundoplication, which requires advanced suturing.
Time ≠ mastery. Should we rethink how we train?

🚁 “They flew me in… and sent me home.”
It’s time to FIG-ure it out.
From the Creators of BIG We now bring you Face Injury Guidelines (FIG) to ask the hard questions:
– Who really needs transfer for facial trauma?
– How many get procedures?
– Are we doing more harm than good?
