Beneath the surface, gas and oil rigs are gathering points for fish, coral, sponges, barnacles, and entire underwater ecosystems. Researchers refer to them as “vertical reefs.”
These and other types of artificial reefs are the focus for the next episode of Dauphin Island Diaries
The Gulf waters off Alabama contain far more history beneath the surface than most people realize. Some of it arrived there by accident, but some was placed there intentionally. Our next episode explores artificial reefs. Check it out Monday.

@history_dame One of the more compelling such relationship was US Grant & Simon Bolivar Buckner. Buckner surrendered to “Unconditional Surrender” Grant at Ft. Donelson. This strained their previously close friendship. But later they reconciled & Buckner served as one of Grant’s pallbearers.

Sometimes history isn’t glamorous.
This is the latrine at Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island. At first glance it looks like a simple “ten-holer,” but it actually allowed the tide from the moat outside the fort to flush and clean it twice each day.

This morning, the USS Farragut (DDG-99) passed through the same waters where her namesake won glory over 160 years ago...at the entrance of Mobile Bay. This video was shot from the east end of Dauphin Island.

Work continues on Dauphin Island. At the Alabama Aquarium yesterday getting information on the Oyster Industry & Artificial Reefs. Had a doofus moment & had the camera set to photo instead of video attempting to shoot the later promised videos.

I had the good fortune of having the firing of a Civil War mountain howitzer demonstrated to me yesterday and was able to video it. Thanks to Robert Bean and the Ft Gaines Historic Site!
