Dr. Saeed Joudeh, at the age of 80.

One day, when I went to Kamal Adwan Hospital during the harshest days of the siege, I saw an elderly doctor whose hair had turned completely white, whose face was covered with deep wrinkles, and whose back was bent from exhaustion. Yet he was leaning over a wounded patient, stitching his injuries while silently crying. His tears were falling onto the torn body of the patient as he worked with dedication.

I approached him and asked: “What’s wrong, Dr. Saeed? What happened?”

He replied, trembling:
“They took revenge on me by bombing my home just a short while ago. All of my family were martyred in retaliation because they had threatened me to leave the hospital, or else they would take revenge on me. I never expected them to be enemies of humanity to this extent—that they are not human beings.

Mustafa, I could not bear to leave northern Gaza without an orthopedic doctor after they killed, just days earlier, the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mohammed Matar along with his entire family, also in retaliation. And they imprisoned Dr. Mohammed Obeid. At that time, not a single orthopedic doctor remained to save the thousands of wounded arriving every hour.

So I made a promise to myself, despite my retirement, to remain loyal to my people and to humanity—to continue treating the wounded. But they are beasts, not human. They bombed a five-story building where my children, my brothers, and their children had taken shelter. They erased them from the civil registry, Mustafa, only because I was helping the wounded here.”

Then he continued his work silently, without telling anyone, so as not to shake the morale of the medical teams.

After he finished treating the wounded who had arrived from another massacre, he performed ablution and, in the midst of the siege, headed to rescue more injured people at Al-Awda Hospital. On his way, occupation aircraft emptied the payload of a warplane onto the road he was walking on, to make sure he would be killed.

Thus, the heroic retired physician Dr. Saeed Joudeh rose as a martyr, advancing forward without retreat. The angels welcomed him as a martyr-groom, joining the hundreds of members of his family whom the occupation erased from the civil registry—whose only “crime” was that they were the children and brothers of a devoted humanitarian doctor.

This is one of the crimes of the Nazi occupation.
