Nine years ago today, the infected blood scandal public inquiry was announced. I still remember where I was when I found out.
The night before, Diana Johnson MP had secured an emergency debate and I’d spent the evening lobbying MPs to attend and encouraging others to do the same.
But honestly, I did not think that day would be the day. There had been so many debates before and moments that raised hope to be dashed. But, by lunchtime on 11 July 2017 (with my phone having gone mad in my pocket without my knowledge as I tinkered with Google ads campaigns for the alloy wheel company I worked at) a colleague said: “Well done mate, I’ve just seen the news.”
He showed me the BBC website headline: “Contaminated blood scandal inquiry announced.” I remember walking out to my car, checking my phone, and seeing the messages. After that, most of the day is a blur and nine years on, the world is different.
The Inquiry happened. The truth is on the public record. Compensation is now being delivered.
Compensation can never come in place of the truth. Thankfully, after years of campaigning, both were secured.
There is still much to do but today I’m thinking of and grateful to everyone who helped push that door open and of those who did not live to see it.

Breaking: @CountBinface would not be able to sit in the House of Commons wearing his signature space-warrior costume in the unlikely event he wins the Clacton by-election against Nigel Farage, the @theipaper can reveal.
The House of Commons operates under a mixture of standing orders, precedent and the Speaker’s authority, and MPs are expected to wear “business-like attire” in the Chamber.
Parliamentary guidance says clothing should demonstrate respect for the House, and that uniforms, large slogan-bearing items and other forms of demonstrative dress are generally not considered in order.
Members who show “flagrant disrespect” in their manner of dress can be asked to withdraw from the Chamber, and the Speaker may refuse to call them to speak.
I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.
It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better.
But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him.

Today is the last day we record the households affected by the policy, which ended on 6 April 2026
Today, we remember the 52 innocent people whose lives were stolen in the 7 July terrorist attacks. We also remember those who were injured, their families and friends, and the heroic emergency service personnel who ran towards danger that day.
21 years on, we reflect on the resilience our city showed in the face of unimaginable tragedy. London remains strong, resilient and united. We must never allow hatred to win.
London will always stand together against those who seek to divide us or peddle extremism. We will always choose hope over fear, unity over division, and we will continue working together to build a safer, stronger London for everyone.
I am so sorry to hear this news. George was a skilled parliamentarian, always kind and generous with his time especially to new MPs. He was also a fabulous raconteur and I heard him telling many wonderful funny stories in the Commons tea room. RIP Sir George
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my predecessor, Sir George Howarth. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Julie, his children, and all his family, friends and former colleagues at this deeply sad time.
The Early Victims' Right to Review will be rolled out nationwide.
The rollout was only possible due to the work of campaigners such as @jadeblueLDN. This is a big step forward, giving victims of rape and serious sexual offences a second chance at justice.
Today we are announcing the largest single addition to our casualty records since the Second World War, following a major international research project drawing on rare historical records.
A total of 9,909 Indian Army servicemen – previously missing from the our records – have now been added, correcting a past historical omission that meant they were never formally commemorated.

This landmark expansion will serve to strengthen Hull's global reach, bringing high-quality teaching, academic support and career-focused programmes into the heart of London.
This afternoon I enjoyed seeing, as I always do, the gardening talents of so many constituents in the second Sunday of this year’s Avenues Open Gardens. This event raises money for local good causes and this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.
