The part where Luke tosses aside his lightsaber, symbolizing not only his rejection of the dark side, but also his surpassing of the Jedi before him, is the defining moment of the saga for me, and one of the greatest moments in cinema in general
But there is something valuable artistically in the theatre of this thing. Through simulacrum we can now determine the original's value - which in turn elevates the new pointless shadow into a fascinating curiosity.
The reason The Room was "so bad it's good" was because it was made with complete sincerity by a bunch of nobodies who tried to make a good movie. By casting A-list actors and having them do a bad job on purpose, you're just making a bad movie.
@Tales_TimeLord@drborgle Fun episode with a messy conclusion! Leagues about the Reality War and what it did to Belinda.
You don't have to love Wedding, but at least Amy and Rory leave without having their entire characters re-written and retconned
Classic Doctor Who was cancelled when it was on a creative high not seen since the 70s
New Who went out like a horse being shot after breaking its leg and hauled to the glue factory
>Palpatine is clearly a genuine connoisseur of the arts
I disagree: Palpatine has to PRETEND to be a connoisseur of the arts, because he's initially a senator from Naboo, and then a Chancellor. The very moment he can, he dispenses with the opulent robes and beautiful furnishings, and favours a simple black hood.
Darth Sidious is a man of very simple tastes, Sheev Palpatine of Naboo is EXPECTED to be a man of artistic refinement and ornamentation. He's acting in accordance with the traditions of his culture, something Andor also explores via Mon Mothma.
Look at his throne Room aboard the Second Death Star. Look at how comparatively subdued the Imperial guard are compared to the Senate Guard!
Sidious genuinely seems to favour a very simple aesthetic, he is unpretentious.
The man had decades of access to the most advanced surgeries in the Galaxy and didn't even attempt to have his scars from Master Windu's attack corrected. He literally has no concern or reaction to being hideously deformed except to use it for political advantage. The moment he is out of the public view and secure as emperor, he wears nondescript unornamented clothing and surrounds himself with brutalism.
That's the Empire, a state so dedicated to an ideal of efficiency that it disdains ornamentation.
KRENNIC likes ornamentation, and in fact he stretches the Imperial Aesthetic almost to breaking point in order to decorate himself.
And yes, the Empire is not purely a critique of fascism, but of Authoritarianism more generally, it is absolutely reasonable to use soviet Aesthetics to represent it.
@mightydudbolt@I_Am_CyberSmith I love your work, but you have to take the L sometimes
I think it would only enrich your account if you admitted when you were wrong
I really enjoy your posts but let's agree whilst beautiful, the prequels whilst visually stunning were duds from storytelling point of view
@I_Am_CyberSmith Palpatine is one of my favourite Star wars Characters and this is one of the best readings of him I've ever seen - guy takes over the universe and wears nothing but black robes??? He could have worn anything once he named himself emperor but gave that all up for control
I unironically agree. The Last Jedi is a brilliant film.
To be fair, Holdo was poorly written and dragged down its overall quality a bit.
But it works as an earnest interrogation of mythology, and it temporarily broke Rey out of being a Mary Sue, allowing her to make catastrophic choices. It’s technically brilliant with striking red motifs and action choreography.
The Last Jedi is a flawed masterpiece. And we will never see a Star Wars movie this ambitious or original again.
@staidindoors I don't think it's trying to be subtle, if you meet the film on the level it presents itself it's really good. It's allegorical horror, it's not trying to be Citizen Kane or the Godfather
Didn't love the film, but really glad they explored Grogu's gambling problems authentically. Would have been really easy to make a joke out of it, but the scene where he has to decide between buying insulin for his cousin or putting it all on red was really well executed
@UtterlyVapid I really don't get this at all, I think it's incredibly economic storytelling and to make obsession into a show would rob it of its tension?
Where on earth would the next 6-8 episodes go?
It is simply inconceivable to me that a significant portion of the population wakes up every morning and chooses to use the Akinator That Makes You Stupid to write their wedding vows, dissertations, tax forms, eulogies etc
