An extraordinary game and, in many ways, a performance that encapsulates where Inter are under Cristian Chivu right now.

There is a huge amount to like offensively. Five goals, different routes to goal, contributions throughout the team and the character to recover after finding themselves 2-0 down so early in the game.

But conceding three at San Siro means this cannot simply be viewed as an excellent Inter performance.

The opening stages were poor. Inter were open, the defensive distances weren’t right and Udinese found far too much space when they broke through the first line of pressure. Against stronger opposition, those mistakes become extremely expensive.

What followed, however, was impressive.

Rather than allowing the game to become frantic, Inter gradually imposed themselves. They moved the ball quicker, pushed Udinese backwards and began finding spaces around their defensive block.

Once Inter established territorial control, the difference in attacking quality became obvious.

There was also something encouraging about where the goals came from. This wasn’t simply Inter rescuing it, or one individual producing something extraordinary. There were contributions from across the side.

That matters.

Carlos Augusto continues to demonstrate that he is far more than simply an alternative at wing-back. Barella remains the emotional and technical heartbeat of this midfield, while the attacking options available to Chivu suddenly look considerably deeper.

Pio Esposito and Bonny are particularly interesting in that respect. Both offer something different and their development potentially gives Inter an attacking depth they simply haven’t possessed in recent seasons.

The concern remains the other end.

You shouldn’t need five goals to win a home game against Udinese.

There were moments tonight when Inter’s desire to attack left spaces that were simply too large. The balance between aggression and control isn’t quite there yet and Chivu has work to do on how Inter defend transitions.

That is probably the biggest takeaway from tonight.

This Inter can hurt teams.

They can score goals.

They can recover from difficult situations.

They have young attacking talent emerging and they possess enough experience not to panic when games turn against them.

But they also look vulnerable.

Against Udinese, you can concede three and score five.

Against Europe’s best, you probably don’t get that luxury.

So 5-3 is simultaneously a very impressive comeback and a warning.

The attacking evolution under Chivu is becoming increasingly interesting.

Now he has to find the defensive balance to go with it.

A chaotic night at San Siro.

Eight goals. Three conceded. Five scored.

Plenty for Chivu to enjoy — and plenty for him to fix.
