Eyes on Ukraine for 2026. Many speaking engagements this next year, but I’ll talk at NSU in February about the importance of Ukraine and highlight the work of @diddabee, @forPEACE_news, and many others who have been doing so much to support Ukraine. Onward.
"Eyes of the autumn", 1985 by Victor Zaretskyi 🧡. This month, his big exhibition will be opened in Kyiv at the Taras Shevchenko National Museum. Zaretskyi was born 100 years ago.
We can get up to $10k matched on our water restoration projects in Ukraine! Any little bit helps us reach a goal of having $20k to help restore running water to villages in Ukraine struggling with destroyed infrastructure! Link for donation in next comment! Thank you!
August 24 is celebrated as Ukraine’s Independence Day. But today the man in this video is under such heavy frontline attacks that he has not even shown up as “online” on his messaging apps.

Join us in Anchorage, Alaska, to protest an international war criminal's presence. Despite the governor's support, the president invited Vladimir Putin. We're here to tell Trump and Putin: Alaska opposes tyranny. #AlaskaStandsWithUkraine

This week I published @FTMag a profile of Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president’s immensely powerful and controversial chief of staff. It was based on interviews with Yermak himself inside his office and at various events where I tagged along with him and his team, as well as interviews with 40+ other people. These are some behind the scenes photos I made along the way.
Here’s a free link to the profile piece. I hope you’ll read and share: https://t.co/QZCnDoZAV4
What I read this week or this weekend and found interesting.
The new world leader in war crimes justice is probably Ukraine. Its general prosecutor is investigating 177,000 suspected war crimes. @avalaina herself has taken testimonies from hundreds of victims. It’s crucial and almost unprecedented legal work, she says. “This is the most documented war in history. We are doing this in real time.” via @KuperSimon

In our new investigation into Russia's use of children for their military drone program, crucial evidence came from @tashurkevich's undercover phone calls. Here are some of the most striking confessions she extracted.
Unelected. Unapologetic. Uncompromising.
Andriy Yermak is not Ukraine’s president. But he often acts like one. He handpicks govt officials—and dismisses them. The PM and military brass frequently defer to him.

This did not just happen overnight, even if it feels that way. This is a shift months in the making. I wrote last week about it coming to a head – and got a lot of criticism from many of the same people now condemning Zelensky. Read this for context: https://t.co/N4vWOsR1h2
To be clear: it was not the Rada, this was not good tsar, bad boyars – it was Zelensky and Yermak who organized this and pushed it through. Orders came from the office of the president last night and the law enforcement committee passed it early morning in such great haste that members had to join over video. Then MPs in Zelensky's ruling factions were told the boss was watching closely how they voted, so most fell in line; they were joined by former pro-Russian party MPs and Tymoshenko's party, as well as a few outliers from other opposition parties.
Ukraine's civil society shows yet again it is prepared to stand for clean government. It is possible 2both fight possible ru agents in anticorrpution agencies & protect agencies themselves. Current govt seems to forget what Yanukovych was overthrown for https://t.co/XskncV3b32
I believe this is the first viral public call for an antigovernment protest in Kyiv since the start of Russia's full-scale war. And it's from a soldier: "Friends, let's gather for the action and defend what we've built over the last decade. We're meeting at 20:00 on the square near the Ivan Franko Theater. It's the closest available place to the President's Office. So, I hope we'll be visible from their windows."
Peak Ukrainian is cursing about something but saying that something in its endearing diminutive. The head of a liberated public utilities exasperatedly speaks about their exhaustive efforts to restore water, "ці Богом забуті свердловинки!" = "these God forsaken 😍wells😍!"
🧵A lengthy thread here on today's news of searches and arrests in Ukraine and what the various parties involved as well as civil society and Kyiv's Western backers see happening.
