Donald Trump’s termination of Register of Copyrights, Shira Perlmutter, is a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis.
It's surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.
Register Perlmutter is a patriot, and her tenure has propelled the @CopyrightOffice into the 21st century.
A brilliant show of unity to say to @10DowningStreet "Our work is not yours to give away" signed by many famous names, including many of the UK's iconic designers
Hundreds of leading British musicians, actors and writers wrote to the Prime Minister today, urging him not to give their work away to AI companies.

Excited to see my work on visual plagiarism with @rahll hit the big time!
And hooray for this incredibly sensible decision from the US copyright office!

Could not agree more, and its also good to mention that it is not just music but this affects all from the fantastic creative industries, globally, including design.
The Copyright Office's new report is balanced, pragmatic, and legally sound. While careful to avoid wading into currently pending legal disputes which are fact specific, it supports creators' position than AI training isn't automatically fair use, and that licensing is necessary.
Agreed but sad that it would appear that Trump has sacked the Head of the Copyright Office after this excellent report. Let's hope our own PM reads the letter on behalf of UK creators which says, "Our work is not yours to give away"
Lots more to say on this, but the US Copyright Office’s report on generative AI training is superb.
It rejects the idea that all gen AI training is fair use, and it makes it clear that licensing training data is the way forward. Plus it destroys a bunch of AI booster mantras along the way (‘it’s just like human learning’ etc.).
Extremely gratifying to see it laid out so sensibly and thoroughly, by the government body responsible for providing guidance on copyright law.
Dua Lipa and Paul McCartney among 400 urging AI copyright protection https://t.co/FEj3Hq1PVS via @MailOnline and designers, too, have signed this letter to the PM, "Our work is not yours to give away"
Thanks @ZoeFranklinLD & many others who stood behind us, the fight goes on to make government listen to the Creative Industries. They cannot continue to dismiss this precious asset in favour of Big Tec. We want to work with AI but ONLY with transparency, attribution & recompense
Tonight I stood with musicians and all of creatives and voted to add protections to the Data Bill to protect their rights and ensure their they can maintain their creativity without threat of their work being stolen.
Deeply disappointed the Gov failed to listen.
