On October 1, China’s National Day of Mourning, members of the China Democracy Party in Vancouver gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate to advocate for democracy and freedom for the Chinese people. Chen Tianzong delivered a speech on behalf of the group. His remarks are as follows:
应该是人民能够自由地说话,能够自由地表达不同意见;
应该是人民拥有信仰的自由,拥有选择自己生活方式的权利;
一个政府可以封锁互联网,但不能永远封锁人的思想;
Dear friends and colleagues,
Good evening, everyone.
My name is Chen Tianzong, and I am a member of the China Democracy Party.
Today is October 1. The Chinese Communist Party calls this its “National Day.” But as we stand here today, we must ask a simple question:
What should a country truly be celebrating?
It should celebrate a society where people are free to speak and free to express different opinions.
It should celebrate freedom of religion and the right of every person to choose how they live their life.
It should celebrate a system where the law protects the people, rather than becoming a tool to suppress dissent.
But for many years, we have seen people detained, imprisoned, and deprived of their freedom simply for criticizing the government, defending human rights, or calling for democracy.
Freedom of speech and the internet are heavily restricted in China. Human rights defenders face repression. Christian house churches that refuse government control, as well as other religious groups, continue to face restrictions, harassment, and detention.
A government may block the internet, but it cannot block people’s minds forever.
It may silence some voices, but it can never silence everyone who longs for freedom.
That is why we are here today: to speak for those who cannot speak freely, and to stand with those who have been persecuted for their political views, their faith, or for defending their basic rights.
We hope that one day, the Chinese people will no longer live in fear simply for speaking the truth.
We hope that no one will have to fear arrest simply for expressing a different opinion.
And we hope that no one will be persecuted because of their faith.
We hope to see a China that truly embraces democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, where the people themselves have the right to participate in deciding the future of their country.
Thank you.

On the eve of the International Day of Democracy, September 15, members of the China Democracy Party Vancouver Branch gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate at 2:00 p.m. on September 12, 2026, to stand up for democracy and freedom for the Chinese people.
Party member Su Wenjun delivered a speech on behalf of the group:
Dear friends,
Hello, everyone!
Today, we are gathered here to mark the International Day of Democracy.
Democracy is not a gift—it is a right that belongs to the people. Freedom is not a privilege—it is the dignity that every person deserves.
We call for an end to one-party dictatorship, an end to political persecution, and the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. The Chinese people must have genuine freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to choose their own future!
Now, let us raise our voices together:
Defend democracy! Defend freedom!
End one-party dictatorship! Build a democratic China!
Release political prisoners! Release prisoners of conscience!
Democratic China! Free China!
Thank you, everyone!

My Requests During This Visit to Hong Kong
1. To turn myself in to the Hong Kong courts.
Lee Cheuk-yan was convicted for the slogan “End One-Party Dictatorship.” He told the court that I was his “mentor and guide.” I would naturally be even more guilty, and therefore I am turning myself in.
At the same time, I wish to report Mao Zedong to the Hong Kong courts. It was Mao Zedong who first put forward and called for “ending one-party dictatorship.” Mao Zedong was the “mentor and guide” behind my own advocacy of “ending one-party dictatorship.” Mao Zedong should likewise be treated as a co-offender in the same case.
2. To request a meeting with Wang Jing, President of the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court.
In 1982, the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court sentenced me to fourteen years in prison without any legal basis. I actually served twelve years. Forty-four years have now passed, yet to this day the court has never, in accordance with the law, provided me with a copy of the judgment against me.
In recent years, the court told relatives and friends who went there on my behalf to make inquiries that I must personally go to the court to collect the judgment. Yet the government does not permit me to return to China. I therefore request a meeting with Wang Jing, President of the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court, and ask her to provide an explanation.
3. In 1978, Party Secretary Xi Zhongxun rescued me from prison and secured my rehabilitation. I have remained grateful to him throughout my life and have never forgotten what he did for me.
At that time, I was exactly thirty years old, in the prime of my youth. I am now seventy-eight, approaching eighty and growing old. Secretary Xi has also been gone for twenty-four years, and the trees upon his grave have long since grown thick.
I therefore respectfully appeal to President Xi Jinping to permit me to return to China so that I may pay my respects at Secretary Xi’s grave and bow before him, thereby offering some consolation to this wish of mine in my twilight years.
I hereby make this public declaration.
