Compreendo perfeitamente o lado empresarial dessa decisão, mas, enquanto líder de um clube, nunca o teria abordado dessa maneira. Só no último dia do período de transferências é que recebi a mensagem de que já não ia jogar.

Enquanto a minha mulher, que trabalhava em Portugal, e eu dávamos como certo que íamos ficar em Lisboa. E depois surgiu aquela proposta do Anderlecht. A minha mulher limitou-se a dizer: 'toma tu a decisão' e acabei por decidir em função da minha carreira. Achei isso incrivelmente difícil porque sentia que estava a afastar a mulher e os filhos de um ambiente onde eram muito felizes."

Sobre o processo de saída, o agora antigo defesa central recorda com mágoa aquele dia 31 de agosto de 2022. “Lembro-me que, em princípio, tinha de voar para a Bélgica para os meus exames médicos logo na manhã seguinte a ter dado o meu sim ao Anderlecht. Foi aí que disse pura e simplesmente: 'desculpem, isso não vai dar'. Os meus filhos ainda estavam num campo de surf perto de Lisboa, não podia partir sem os ver. Fui para lá a conduzir para dar a notícia pessoalmente.

Para mim, essas primeiras semanas no Anderlecht foram as mais difíceis da minha carreira como futebolista. Penso que esse sentimento só desapareceu após o Campeonato do Mundo de 2022 no Qatar. Porque vi nessa altura que os meus filhos e a minha mulher, que encontrou trabalho em Antuérpia bastante depressa, também eram felizes na Bélgica.”

The Volta a Portugal is back, and once again it promises to be one of the most entertaining stage races of the season. Better yet, this year's edition will be broadcast internationally on Max, making it much easier for cycling fans around the world to follow the race.

If you enjoy aggressive, attacking cycling, spectacular mountain stages, and unpredictable racing, I genuinely recommend watching the Volta a Portugal.

The course is packed with climbing. The legendary ascent to Torre returns, with its 21.2 km climb at 6.3%, while the iconic Senhora da Graça will once again host the decisive final mountain finish, featuring an 8.4 km ascent at 7.4%. There are also several unique challenges throughout the race. On the Senhora da Graça stage, the riders will tackle Alto de Carvalhais and then take on a sterrato section immediately after the climb. Stage 7, which finishes at the famous Termas do Gerês, includes the climb to Germil , featuring uphill cobbled sections. Between the demanding climbs, technical roads, and stunning scenery, this year's Volta a Portugal has all the ingredients to deliver a fantastic week of racing.

For the overall victory, my pick is Artem Nych. The defending champion knows exactly how to prepare for this race, and with both a prologue and an individual time trial in Viseu on the route, he once again starts as my favourite for the yellow jersey.

His biggest rival could well be his own teammate, Alexis Guerín. Runner-up last year, Guerin has enjoyed another strong season and should once again be among the main contenders. While he is not quite as strong against the clock as Nych, his climbing ability makes him a serious threat.

Another rider to watch closely is UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Adrià Pericas. One of the most exciting young climbers in the field, Pericas has already produced good performances in the mountains, including at the Giro Next Gen last year and with his runner-up finish at the Vuelta a Asturias earlier this season. He will likely need to make the difference in the mountains, as the time trial is not his strongest discipline.

The EFAPEL team also arrives with several strong contenders. Tiago Antunes is enjoying an excellent season and, after an impressive ride last year, looks capable of improving even further. His ability in the time trial could also prove valuable.

Jesús David Peña is another perennial contender. The Colombian is one of the best climbers in the race and should once again be fighting near the top of the general classification.

Keep an eye as well on Txpmin Juaristi. He finished second here in 2023 is a solid time trialist, and has the qualities to surprise over the course of the week.

Jokin Murguialday is another rider capable of challenging for a strong overall result, while veteran Mikel Bizkarra remains one of the purest climbers in the peloton and should always be respected whenever the road heads uphill.

Hugo de la Calle also deserves a mention after his impressive performances at the Tour of Slovenia, and Pedro Silva is another interesting outsider following a very encouraging season.

Overall, the Volta a Portugal looks set to deliver another thrilling edition, with demanding mountain stages, exciting racing, and a highly competitive battle for the general classification. If you haven't watched this race before, this year's international broadcast is the perfect opportunity to discover one of cycling's most entertaining events.
