Sara Blakely turned $5,000 and a pair of scissors into the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire, and she did it without one dollar of investment, a bank loan, or a single ad.
She still owned 100% of the company the day it crossed a billion. Every share, because she never sold one.
It started because she cut the feet off her own pantyhose to wear under white pants, then went looking for the thing she had just invented and found that nobody made it.
Blakely was 27, selling fax machines door to door in Florida, getting doors shut in her face for 7 years. She had $5,000 saved and no background in any of it. She wrote her own patent out of a textbook because she could not afford a lawyer, and drove to the hosiery mills of North Carolina to beg someone to make it. Every mill, all run by men, told her it was crazy and sent her home.
Two weeks later one of them called back. His daughters had told him she was right.
She talked her way into Neiman Marcus, flew to Dallas, and when the buyer went cold she walked her into the restroom and changed on the spot to show her the before and the after. Spanx was in 7 stores by the end of that week.
The video is Blakely herself, telling how a woman with no money and no connections built it alone. Watch the part where she says what her father handed her the week he moved out.
When she was 16 she watched her best friend killed by a car, and soon after her parents split. The week her father moved out he came into her room and handed her a set of tapes about not living ruled by the fear of failure. She says that, not the scissors, is where Spanx really began.
Most people quit at the first no. She heard no from every mill in the state and kept driving. The $5,000 was never the rare part. A head that stopped flinching at failure at 16 is.
Everyone wants the billion-dollar idea. Almost nobody wants the year of cold calls and closed doors it takes to find out if they are holding one. She owns all of it because she was the only person willing to be told no long enough to reach the yes.
