Tactical update for Argentina (yes, I wasn't able to sleep so thought I would jot it down).
We have seen that Scaloni prefers playing with a 4-4-2 diamond along with adventurous full-backs (almost like wing-backs).
The emphasis has been on central overload and playing primarily through the middle.
The update:
1. Messi as the most advanced player of that diamond instead of being a part of the front-two.
- The creative hub to roam and create chances, something Messi specializes in.
2. Alvarez and Lautaro as a spread-apart striking duo with Messi as the trequartista.
- The trequartista usually presses less than other attacking midfielders, so the forwards and central midfielders need to work hard.
- Alvarez as the target-forward with Lautaro as a deep-lying forward, creating a horizontally and vertically misaligned triangle at the top.
- Lautaro and Alvarez move wider to either drag opposition defenders wider for Messi to exploit that central space OR to run in-behind as the defenders get attracted towards Messi.
The biggest strength of the 4-1-2-1-2 diamond is its dominance in central areas. Its biggest weakness is defending wide spaces, so attacking full-backs need to balance their forward runs, and the midfielders must be willing to slide across to support them.
- Good thing? Enzo Fernandez and De Paul have the workrate and strength to fill in the spaces left by the full-backs or overlap/underlap depending upon how the front-three manipulate the opposition defense.
As the tactic is primarily for a knockout tournament, counter-pressing can also be implemented, especially considering the physicality portrayed by that Argentine squad.
What do you think?
Morocco approached the game in a very conservative manner. As we have talked about before, I think the best way to approach games against qualitatively superior opponents is to be able to do a bit of everything: defend zonally, press from restarts, have transition threat, and, most importantly, try to build up and play whenever you can. Norway and Cape Verde have shown this approach, and I think it scales against everyone.
Morocco had very few clear buildup patterns and generally took little risk in possession. They usually looked to build, but went long as soon as France jumped to press rather than trying to play through it. It is understandable why they chose this approach against an opponent of France’s quality, but I think it ultimately made the game more comfortable for France than it needed to be.
To beat teams like France and Argentina, you need to make the game uncomfortable for them. The best way to do that is to exploit their major out-of-possession weaknesses, mainly their disjointed press and vulnerable high-to-mid block. Norway showed this and created a lot against France despite playing with a complete second-string team.
If you don’t have enough solutions with the ball, the pressure from France will eventually result in something. Morocco were fortunate to still be level at half-time.
To sum up Morocco, as we mentioned in our analysis on the Game Changer platform, I think they are currently stuck between approaches. Neither do they stretch the opposition by playing with large distances and pinning the opposition defensive line, nor do they create enough small-space combinations with shorter distances. I’m not sure how much of it is coach-led, but they seem to do a bit of both throughout the game, which I don’t think is as effective as committing fully to one clear idea.

Wenger says Mbappé’s 37.4 km/h top speed makes him almost impossible to stop.
"I would say if you take the top speed of the top five French players, they're quicker than everybody else in this tournament.
So, you speak about Mbappé. Mbappé's top speed, 37.4.
So, how can you fight against that?
Spain is perfect technique and perfect team intelligence and game intelligence has to be perfect.
Spain is maybe the team who can fight against such physical superiority.
But overall, you see because the spaces are very short now for the players, you need top-level technique or to be very explosive."
🎙️ José Mourinho on the difference between a captain and a true leader:
🗣️ Mourinho: “I had captains who were not leaders. The captain and the leader are a big, big difference.
When you have real leaders, you can focus more on the coaching side. I had one at Porto, Jorge Costa.
We were losing 2-0 at halftime against Belenenses. I was walking towards the dressing room, and everyone could see I was furious. Jorge Costa stopped me and said: ‘Wait outside for two minutes, please.’
He went inside, closed the door, and did the dirty job for me. Then he opened the door and told me: ‘Coach, now you can go.’
He did everything I would have done in that dressing room. We came back and won 3-2. He was a centre-back who almost never scored goals, but he scored two that day.
You don’t buy leaders. You don’t create leaders. When you have them, your team is already one step ahead.”
🇳🇴🏴 I don't think England understand what's coming on Saturday.
English football is part of Norway's DNA. State TV has shown the English league every Saturday since 1969. Most Norwegians supported an English club before a Norwegian one. No footballing nation outside Britain lives English football the way we do. Beating England means more to us than beating Brazil ever could.
And beyond Haaland and Ødegaard, half our squad play their club football in England. Every one of them is desperate for bragging rights in their own dressing room.
England aren't facing one superstar. They're facing men with a point to prove and a nation that has waited decades for this.
Norway will knock England out of the World Cup on Saturday.
