Mate, “most of them don’t work” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Non-UK born employment rates sit around the same level as UK-born (roughly 75%), and higher for a lot of groups, especially EU-born. Plenty are on work visas that literally require a job and a salary threshold (Skilled Worker is currently £41,700 or the going rate).

Five years for settlement isn’t some uniquely soft UK thing either, Germany, France, Ireland and others are in the same ballpark, and Canada/Australia are often quicker. ILR also isn’t a passport. You usually need another year of ILR, the Life in the UK test, English at B1, and stricter absence rules before citizenship.

“Dashing it away like candy” is a fun phrase, but the actual process has a few more hoops than that.
Some genuine issues with volumes and integration exist, but this is more vibes than the actual rules.
