My first post-doc paper on shrew mitochondria was just published in @JPhysiol!

We were trying to understand the role of mitochondrial content, 3D morphology and inter-organelle interactions in shaping the extreme metabolism of this 5 g mammal.
@biologistimo Looks like crazing of the glaze and water infiltration (potential bacterial growth). You can see similar web-like glaze pattern outside of the dark region you're asking about.
This session was awesome! We learned so much from a wide range of speakers/ backgrounds. Thanks to all the speakers for participating and to our mysterious benefactor for financial support.
@APS_CEPS#Comparative2022 Make sure to attend The Complex Lives of Mitochondria symposium at 2 in Crystal 1. We have talks covering extreme animals (Greenland sharks!?) and mitochondrial networks. Come by for some new perspectives on everyone's favorite powerhouse.
We have several PhD and MSc positions available as part of a newly funded NSERC Alliance grant to look at the effects of road salt on developing Pacific salmon. This is a great project at the interface of basic and applied science. For details see:

. @dillon_chung reports on Erich Eberts and @WelchLab_UTSC recent @eLife paper showing that hummingbirds are able to reduce their metabolism to stock up on fuel to ensure that they can maximize their energy stores for migration
