DiMeo Farms was featured in the media again, this time it was not for “America’s Most Wanted” lol, but for tips on “picking blueberries” in the proper containers, without crushing all the blueberries on the bottom. We often see pick your own blueberry farms all across the United States who hand out coffee cans or other deep containers to pick blueberries at their local u-pick farms, but that is wrong for preserving fruit quality. Because what happens is the blueberries are heated to an internal temperature of about 86 degrees in the hot summer sun. Then the weight of the blueberries in the can crushes all the fruit on the bottom that has not had a chance to cool yet, which then significantly reduces the shelflife of your blueberries once you take them home. This is why blueberry farmers pick in crates (lugs) no deeper than 2 1/2 inches and then take them back to the blueberry packing house to pre-cool them before placing them in the coolers to cool down the blueberries so they don’t get smashed.
This is why regenerative home gardeners are now growing their own organic blueberries at home and making heirloom blueberry bushes an important part of their sustainable edible landscaping. Not just to save money, but for better health.

This is the headline in the Wall Street Journal. We have been saying this for quite some time. Scroll back in our posts. American farmers now want to retire, but there are not enough young new generation farmers to replace them. So farmers across the United States are now selling their farm and farmland to developers, hedge funds, foreign countries, data centers, warehouses, foreign investors, big food companies and large private investors who want to control your food, water rights, and much more. The majority of American farmers are now all saying the same thing, they don’t have someone from the next generation to continue the family farm. This is why more and more of your food is now being imported in from countries outside the United States. As a country, we simply can’t allow this to happen. Something has to be done. Let’s come together to find a way to fix this problem and keep your local American farms going, before it’s too late. This is not a political issue, this is a national security issue.
