@tempo54_ Thanks for what you do with these stats I never see anywhere else. I fell for Stray Kids when they won their VMA and have tried to keep a scrapbook of their positive results and you really help.
@AJamesMcCarthy@astro_reid Just ordered for my sister's birthday, she followed Artemis and shared it all with me. I'm so excited to give this to her, thanks so much!
You've seen the meme: one opossum eats 5,000 ticks a season. Unfortunately, it's wrong.
When researchers dissected the stomachs of 32 wild opossums, they found zero ticks. The number came from a single lab study that got stretched into folklore, and it still gets repeated everywhere.
But the opossum doesn't need the lie. It's the only marsupial in North America. It cleans up carrion, rotting fruit, slugs, snails, and the rodents you'd rather not have around. It eats copperheads and rattlesnakes, because it's immune to their venom. And it almost never carries rabies, since its body runs too cool for the virus to take hold.
So when one waddles through the yard at night, you're not looking at a pest, you're looking at the cleanup crew that works for free.
Thursday's walk. A lot of birds today. A Northern Cardinal, Common Yellowthroat, Gray Catbird, Eastern Warbling Vireo, Red-winged Blackbird, American Robin, Northern Yellow Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo, Wood Thrush and a Baltimore Oriole.
Put a few rocks in your birdbath. Bees, butterflies, and other small pollinators drown in open water. They land to drink, get caught in the surface tension, and can't get out. A few stones breaking the surface gives them a dry landing pad to drink from.
Don't harm opossums! They’re harmless and actually really useful. They keep pests in check (eating ticks, roaches, rats, and scorpions), clean up dead animals, and help spread seeds. Basically, they’re nature’s cleanup crew
I mounted up these giclee prints today to take into town to add to the gallery wall soon. Not feeling very motivated to rush though as sales have been so slow there for months and months now. Not like what it once was. It’s all so futile. #art#drawing#wildlife
If an owl box is on your weekend project list, awesome! But a quick heads up: owls need species-specific boxes, and the wrong size turns a box into a predator trap.
What you build depends on the owls you have. Do a quick bit of research on the owls in your neck of the woods.
Always use untreated wood, no external perch, add wood shavings in the bottom, and a side hatch that opens for cleaning.
For my UK friends: Barn Owl Trust has free plans.
In North America: Cornell's NestWatch has free plans for every type of owl.
Carol and Hubert are still here and are approaching 1 year old. at this point, I'm willing to let them go separately if that helps them find homes. They are getting 0 interest as a pair and they'll be fine separated. please share
