That was not a joke. It was sexual innuendo directed at a 15 year old girl by Karen Nyamu, a sitting Senator of the Republic of Kenya, and a mother of daughters herself.
What makes it even more disturbing is the lack of remorse. The apology was clearly reluctant and only came after sustained pressure from fellow Senators and public outrage. But she kept protesting even as she read it.
Such remarks have no place anywhere, let alone on the floor of the Senate. It is deeply unfortunate that this came from someone seeking to represent the women of Nairobi in a leadership position where she would be expected to champion the rights, dignity and protection of women and vulnerable girls.
Public office demands responsibility, maturity and appreciation of the influence leaders hold in society.
The Senate from its origins in Ancient Rome was conceived as a chamber of statesmanship, wisdom and dignity. A house where those entrusted with public responsibility would rise above vulgarity and uphold the moral seriousness of leadership.
Last night, I was reminded that being Black, Beautiful, and Educated is seen as a revolutionary act.
This is why I'm vocal about loving studying and education advocacy as a Black girl - the world struggles to accept our excellence.
Representation MATTERS

BREAKING NEWS: African Union suspends Madagascar from its body after military take over.
However, in reaction to this the new Military President of Madagascar Colonel Michael Randrianirina:
“We do not wish to remain part of an organization that prioritizes membership over genuine care. We reject a system controlled by France, which allows the people of Madagascar to suffer while our wealth enriches French oligarchs. Madagascar is forging a new path to freedom, and we need fresh air to ensure our survival!”

Picture this…
In December 2023, the Global Center for Adaptation (GCA), led by Dutch professor Patrick Verkooijen quietly gives the University of Nairobi about €1.2 million for a climate-related research partnership.
A generous act, right?
But just weeks later, in January 2024, President William Ruto appoints that very same Patrick Verkooijen as Chancellor of the University of Nairobi ,the same university that had just received money from his organization.
Then the story shifts.
In the Netherlands, Global Center on Adaptation’s own home country, the Government starts to lose faith.
By 2025, Dutch ministries ,including Infrastructure & Water and Foreign Affairs announce they’re withdrawing funding the Global Center on Adaptation , citing budget issues, governance concerns, and questions of political entanglement…
Translation: they no longer trust how it’s being run.
Yet while the Netherlands is pulling away, Kenya is leaning in…In July 2025, Ruto and Verkooijen stand side by side in Nairobi, smiling for the cameras as they host a groundbreaking ceremony for GCA’s new African headquarters.,They call it a “dual headquarters” in Rotterdam(Netherlands )and Nairobi.
But the truth is simple, the Dutch government wants nothing more to do with it, and the organization is already shifting its base entirely to Kenya.
Then, without public debate, another move happens.
On May 2, 2025, Kenya quietly publishes Legal Notice No. 82 of 2025 , officially granting GCA diplomatic-style immunity under the Privileges and Immunities Act.
That means this foreign NGO now operates above Kenyan law…It can’t be sued, can’t be investigated, can’t be audited, and its offices are legally untouchable ,even by government😳😳
And as if that’s not enough, the same NGO will now house Kenya’s Ministry of Environment inside its new headquarters ,the very ministry meant to regulate environmental policy and partnerships like this one.
All this… happened in under two years.
If this is what “climate partnership” looks like,
then maybe it’s time we start asking who’s really adapting to who.
Why does such an NGO need a diplomatic style immunity?
Here is my full video on the same https://t.co/nHH74l9OKL
@GCAdaptation why does such you need immunity?
@MakusanyaKE@HonAdenDuale I even wonder what's the point of that SHIF. If I paid the same amount they are deducting from my payslip to a private insurance cover, I would premium health services. They are just scamming us.
Aaron Cheruiyot, I saw the tweet you deleted and you should know we are not fools.
You claim we are peddling falsehoods.
But @Aaroncheruiyot, every tweet exposing Duale and ShA has included data and screenshots from the official ShA website.
It’s ShA’s own data.
So what falsehoods are you talking about?
Secondly, you say Duale has “exposed” hospitals doing wrong.
A simple question: why haven’t the owners of those hospitals who already received money from ShA before suspension been arrested?
What about the rest of the ghost hospitals ?
What you are trying to do won’t work.
Duale belongs in jail.
Duale is a criminal.
Kenyans are not paying ShA monthly just for that money to be stolen.
The @Kenyajudiciary must go beyond holding John Chebochok accountable, it must explicitly name and address the failures of oversight institutions that enabled his candidacy.
Justice Joseph K. Sergon, you must protect tea workers from sexual exploitation.
#AllEyesonTheJudiciary
Let Kericho be where Kenya draws the line. Where the judiciary says: No more. Not again. John Chebochok must never be trusted with power. #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary
Leadership must be earned through integrity not built on broken women’s backs. The court must say clearly: John Chebochok is unfit. Period. #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary
This case is not about revenge it’s about responsibility. Let the judiciary affirm that someone like John Chebochok should never lead a public institution again. #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary
Do you remember him?
Do you believe John Chebochok, a man accused of exploiting vulnerable women for work deserves to hold public office?
On 23rd July, the Kericho High Court, through Justice Joseph Sergon will deliver a judgment.
Protect tea workers.
