Shipping through Russia’s Northern Sea Route reached a record 133 voyages in September, more than four times the level recorded in 2022 and 46% higher than in August, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence.

Almost half of the transits were made by Russian-flagged vessels, while Chinese operators are increasingly using the Arctic as an alternative route to Europe. One Chinese container ship recently reached the UK from Qingdao in 24 days, compared with 40 days or more via the Suez Canal or Cape of Good Hope.

The shift is being driven by mounting pressure on traditional trade corridors: instability around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, and drought-related constraints at the Panama Canal are pushing shipowners to look for alternatives. Traffic is growing, with 29 bulk carriers using the route in September, up from 18 in August and 12 a year earlier, while crude tanker traffic also hit a record alongside continued LNG carrier traffic.

Russia, meanwhile, is expanding infrastructure along the Northern Sea Route, a unique and strategically important waterway running along Russia’s northern coast and offering the shortest shipping corridor between Europe and Asia, with plans for year-round navigation, more nuclear icebreakers, and Arc7-class vessels.

Вышли из поселка на нормальную сухую бетонку 🚶‍♂️. После того как неделями ковыряешь грязь берцами и каждый шаг дается с трудом, просто пройтись по ровной плитке — ощущение, будто на домашний ковер ступил.
Шли по делу, но на пару минут встали перевести дух у какого-то здания. У всех уже ноги отваливались, спины затекли, а тут хоть на секунду можно плечи расправить да затылок почесать.
