@paulweel29@jessesingal I don't know. This is extremely novel technology. They could increase overall vehicle miles traveled. They could pull New Yorkers who currently use transit or bikes to use AVs, this would increase congestion on the street, potentially making the street space less safe for all.
@Boenau@jessesingal Hey Andy, I'm a fan, thanks for responding.
I apologize for the divisive language, I am genuinely interested in this topic.
Are you aware of evidence that shows overall traffic casualties in a given city are reduced when these products are introduced into that city?
@jessesingal ... which would likely be more dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, etc.
NYC has been instituting proven safety measures for decades, and there's still a lot of work to do on that front. But we're a very different city than Phoenix, we're already much safer.
@jessesingal Waymo has not released evidence that shows that when their products are unleashed into an urban environment, overall traffic casualties in that city drop.
These products are brand new, it's possible that they increase overall vehicle miles traveled in a city...
@Brookbrkln2@StreetsblogNYC@NYC_DOT cars are great for rural areas, and they're the only convenient form of transportation in most of america. thankfully, that's not the case in NYC, our leaders understand that cars aren't compatible with human density. it's a problem of geometry, not NYC's leaders.
@Brookbrkln2@StreetsblogNYC@NYC_DOT You share two opinions in this tweet, the second one is completely valid. The first is incompatible with facts, it's mathematical incorrect. There isn't a car-oriented dense city on the planet in which citizens aren't plagued by traffic congestion and parking problems.

@Brookbrkln2@StreetsblogNYC@NYC_DOT I agree, driving in the city can be very stressful! Have you tried alternative forms of transportation like taking the train, riding a bike, or taking a bus? It's much less of a headache, and you don't congest the streets as much, which benefits everyone.
@scissorkim@StreetsblogNYC@NYC_DOT The parked cars belong to the 1/5 households in Greenwich Village that own cars, as well as anyone who drives into Greenwich Village and parks there.
In a city where every improvement is met with bureaucracy and exorbitant price tags, it's refreshing to see @NYC_DOT do easy things to make life in New York a little better...
Like turning an extra lane of parking in Greenwich Village into a new seating area 🌊
@magills_ this post has been up for over 2 hours and there's almost 700k views. how in the fuck has twitter not added a community note. this is blatantly false information that can be proven so with very little effort. @nikitabier
