The big-screen quote comes from Lu You’s poem “Journey to Chengdu” (Chengdu Xing). The original poem is as follows:

Leaning on a brocade lute, striking a jade pot,
The mad scholar from Wu roams Chengdu.
Chengdu has ten thousand crabapple trees,
Their splendid bloom unmatched in all the world.
A white snow horse with golden bridle and black mane,
Gallops at sunset to welcome the famous beauty.
Rouge fades away to reveal jade-like skin,
Emerald tresses half undone, charmingly uncombed.
Facing guests with Wu silk, he writes freely,
Slanted lines of small cursive, dense then sparse.
Ink blooms delicate and moist, never dry,
Wind-tossed branches and rain-soaked leaves — every stroke unique.
Moonlight soaks her silk stockings as the clear night passes,
Covered in flower shadows, drunk and needing support.
Coming east, this joy has turned to emptiness,
Sitting in sorrow as new frost touches my temples and beard.
Easy to find a thousand bushels of pearls from Hepu,
Hard to find a pair of carp from the Jin River.

🌸 Lu You deeply loved crabapple blossoms and was known as the “Crabapple Maniac.” During the Southern Song Dynasty, Chengdu’s crabapple flowers were world-renowned. Places like Biji Lane and Yan Wang Palace were famous viewing spots. He wrote many poems recording the magnificent crabapple scenery of Shu (Sichuan).
