Dr. Russell Barkley perfectly explained the video game vs homework paradox in ADHD:
Kids with ADHD can play video games for hours straight… but struggle to do homework for even a few minutes.
Why?
Video games give constant, immediate feedback and rewards.
Homework gives nothing — delayed consequences and no feedback.
Brain imaging studies show people with ADHD have lower dopamine activity in the prefrontal cortex and reward pathways. This makes them highly responsive to immediate, frequent rewards (like video games) while struggling with delayed or low-stimulation tasks (like homework).
It’s not laziness or lack of willpower, it’s a neurological difference that needs the right environment and structure to thrive.
