For the longest time, I thought life would get better after the next milestone.
After medical school.
After housemanship.
After NYSC.
After the next exam.
After the next promotion.
After the next achievement.
Then I came across a concept called destination addiction.
It's the belief that happiness lives somewhere else.
In the next job.
The next relationship.
The next city.
The next milestone.
"When I lose the weight."
"When I get the promotion."
"When I find the right person."
"When I get married"
"When I have kids"
"When I retire"
"Then I'll be happy."
The problem is that "then" keeps moving.
You arrive at one destination and immediately create another.
The goalpost keeps shifting.
Again.
And again.
The answer isn't to stop dreaming or become less ambitious.
It's learning to appreciate your current life while still building your future one.
Because if you don't know how to be present now, there's a good chance you won't know how to be present then.
And that "perfect future" you've been chasing may never arrive, because by the time it arrived, you never really experienced it because you were already looking forward to the next milestone.
Think about it.
Feyi was just 26, yet, she was dealing with stage 4, cervical cancer. Back in 2021, a doctor mentioned HPV to her during a checkup. She said she understood and would follow up. Then…
I remember when I was about to start a building project in ikoyi years ago, this student from Unilag hit me up to work for free but I offered him transport initially. He reminded me of myself when I moved back to Nigeria and offered to work for free at my friends real estate company. His talent was exceptional. Offered him payment for his services in the end.
I was emailed by one of the largest organizations in the world recently about him because they were considering employing him.
I settled down to write a very detailed and great recommendation about all the work he did and how he even started for free. I even attached pictures.
He sent me a message that he got the job this morning.
Imagine having A1 in Physics, Chemistry, Civic, and Further Maths, then scoring D7, E8, or F9 in English.
Why? Leaked paper. Last-minute timetable change. Some wrote the exam at 11pm, drained and unprepared.
Now WAEC brands them “failures”?
These students deserve better.
Chinedu graduated top of his class.
First-class in Electrical Engineering.
NYSC in Abuja.
He thought his life was finally about to start.
Until he started applying for jobs.
50 applications.
No response.
Then he saw an opening at a major oil company.
He was qualified. He applied.
He didn’t even get shortlisted.
But his classmate—who partied through school—got the job.
His uncle is a senator.
Frustrated, Chinedu started tutoring kids. ₦5k per student.
One day, on his way home, a classmate zoomed past in a Benz.
“Bro, this crypto thing changed my life,” the guy said.
“No one cares about degree again. School na scam.”
That was the first time Chinedu heard it.
But it wasn’t just Chinedu.
It was Halima—the pharmacy graduate selling perfumes.
It was Emeka—the Mass Comm grad driving Bolt.
It was Aisha—the best in her department, now ghostwriting for influencers.
It spread like wildfire.
A generation of Nigerians watched their degrees collect dust, while politicians’ children schooled abroad, came home, and got top jobs—no interview.
That’s when “school na scam” stopped being a joke.
It became a coping mechanism.
But here’s the truth:
School isn’t the scam.
A system that crushes talent and rewards connections is.
Education is still the key—but Nigeria lost the lock.
So when they scream “school na scam,”
don’t argue.
Listen.
Because behind every “school na scam” is a broken dream—and a country that didn’t keep its promises.

With a heart so full it aches, our kids depart Lagos Nigeria today with for America, where they’ll compete in Athens Georgia, New York City and Harvard University.
Typing these words fill my eyes with tears all over again because I know their stories.
Ferdinand- Differently abled child, living with cerebral palsy, used to be bullied by other children in his community , born to poor fisherman in the Largest floating slum in the world. But when he plays chess, the world standstill.
Mary- her family was almost killed by Boko Haram terrorists. Forgotten in an IDP camp in Northern Nigeria where dreams go to die. But hers didn’t.
Mabel-radiant and full of promise. Met her 7 years ago in the slums of Ikorodu with a sparkle in her eyes but no opportunity to go to school. Today a fierce chess queen with dreams to be a doctor.
Jamiu—Abandoned by father as a child, watched his mum die in my hands, Homeless. Yet undefeated and already one of the best chess players in the country for his age category.
They have braved all odds to be here today to represent children like them who have been told they were invincible.
To the kids: play with heart, walk with pride. Know that the dreams of many others fly with you today, not as a burden but as light.
You are becoming the kind of story the world cannot ignore.
We still need all the help and support we can get, so if you’re in Georgia, NYC or Boston, come support the kids as they show the world what they’re truly made of. I have also put up a Go fund me link in Bio for those who asked to donate.
Dates:
Athens Georgia (March 29th)
New York City (April 2nd)
