The late warrant officer Colbern Mashego (49) 🕊️🕊️was a committed member of the Hawks’ narcotics unit who was tragically killed on the 27 November 2016 during an investigation into a drug trafficking network. He was shot dead in Jet Park, Boksburg, after stopping two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers who were allegedly transporting a large bag of drugs.
Mashego had pulled over a Ford Ranger driven by the two officers en route to OR Tambo as he approached the vehicle, a gunfight broke out, and he was fatally wounded. One of the corrupt officers, a sergeant, shot himself at the scene immediately after the shootout. The second officer fled in a police vehicle but was later tracked down and arrested. A bag of drugs was recovered from the scene.
The incident triggered a wider investigation that uncovered deep rooted corruption within SAPS and the Hawks at the airport. It revealed a sophisticated scheme involving the theft and resale of confiscated narcotics from drug mules, highlighting competing interests and internal conflicts over control of the drug trade at the facility.
