The regulatory double standard: Tesla vs. Mercedes

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) is being blocked from Level 3+ in Europe. But somehow, Mercedes’ Drive Pilot got approved for hands-free operation at 60 km/h.

🤔 Why the double standard? Do you think this is fair play?

🚘 Tesla FSD has driven millions of real-world miles across complex urban environments.

🚘 Mercedes' Drive Pilot is limited to certain highways, under specific conditions & at low speeds

🚘 Tesla FSD can handle city streets, intersections, highways and unpredictable scenarios

🚘 Mercedes’ Drive Pilot requires perfect conditions and can’t even change lanes autonomously

Yet @UNECE regulators approved Mercedes’ system but won’t approve Tesla FSD for anything beyond Level 2.

Why? Because UNECE is bending the rules to favor laggardcy OEMs.

If self-driving regulations were based on real-world performance, @Tesla's FSD would be leading in Europe. Instead, bureaucratic protectionism is keeping the best tech locked down while letting half-baked alternatives through.

🇪🇺Europe can’t afford to pick winners and losers in autonomy. The best system should win. Based on merit.

I think Tesla should offer a one-time free FSD transfer to a new vehicle for all Tesla owners who meet two conditions:

• Their current Tesla has Hardware 3 (HW3).
• They purchased FSD outright (not via subscription).

Owners should have the flexibility to use this free FSD transfer whenever they choose and for any new Tesla of their choice. This policy would benefit Tesla by reducing the need for future HW3 computer upgrades and clogging up service centers while also incentivizing new vehicle purchases.
