I Reject the Ministry of Information’s Proposed Media Accreditation & Online Registration!
My name is Sainey M.K. Marenah, founder and editor of The Alkamba Times. I was forced into exile under the brutal dictatorship of former President Yahya Jammeh because I dared to tell the truth. I lived the nightmare of draconian media laws that turned journalists into targets — arrests, threats, torture, forced disappearance, and in some cases death. Many of my colleagues never made it home. I know exactly what government control of the press looks like.
Today, under the so-called new government, the Ministry of Information is once again pushing “media accreditation” and mandatory online registration for journalists and media houses. They call it regulation. I call it the same old chains in new wrapping.
I REJECT this proposal in the strongest possible terms.
No government has the right to decide who is a journalist and who is not. No ministry should hold the power to register, monitor, or revoke the right of independent voices to operate online. This is not about professionalism — it is about control. It is about creating a list today that can become a blacklist tomorrow.
I survived Jammeh’s era precisely because some of us refused to be silenced. I will not now, after everything we sacrificed, hand over the keys of press freedom to any administration — no matter how democratic it claims to be.
The Alkamba Times will NOT apply for accreditation. We will NOT register. We will continue to serve the Gambian people with fearless, independent journalism as we have done for years — from abroad and from home.
To my fellow journalists, media owners, civil society, and every Gambian who believes in democracy:
This is the moment to stand up. Say NO to media accreditation. Say NO to online registration. Say NO to any law that seeks to license free speech.
Press freedom is not a privilege granted by government. It is a right guaranteed by our Constitution and paid for with the blood and exile of too many brave Gambians.
Let history not repeat itself.

With the support of @UNFPATheGambia, We concluded 2025 with the successful implementation of the AfriYAN Youth Mentorship Program, a six-week journey empowering adolescents with knowledge, life skills, and confidence to navigate adolescence safely and responsibly.

Just spent the last few hours with some incredible young minds discussing mentorship.
This was easily the most rewarding experience I’ve had in months. It reminded me of the things that truly make me content. #AfriyanYouthMentorship
