In 1954, the GoI instituted the Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian honor. The very 1st recipients selected for the award were C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and C.V. Raman.

President Rajendra Prasad sent a formal invitation to Raman, asking him to travel to New Delhi in late Jan 1955 for the investiture ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Raman, who was operating out of the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, wrote back to the President politely declining the invitation to attend the ceremony in person.

His reason was simple, uncompromising, and deeply characteristic of his devotion to science: 1 of his Ph.D. students was finishing his doctoral dissertation, and the submission deadline fell before the end of Jan.

Raman insisted that his presence in the lab was essential to guide the student, review the thesis, and sign off on the manuscript before it was submitted.

He believed that leaving his student alone at a critical moment in his scientific career to receive a personal honor would be a dereliction of his duty as a mentor. 🙏🙏

आज मुझे उत्तर प्रदेश के छात्रों से 50+ मैसेज आए हैं। उनका कहना है कि चार मेडिकल कॉलेजों में आज भी 90% से अधिक सीटें आरक्षित हैं, जबकि राज्य सरकार ने हाईकोर्ट के समक्ष 2026-27 से SC आरक्षण को 21% तक सीमित करने का आश्वासन दिया था।

यह वोटबैंक की राजनीति के लिए बच्चों के भविष्य के साथ खिलवाड़ है।

क्या UP में कोई तथाकथित सवर्ण नेता है, जो इन छात्रों के हक़ के लिए आवाज़ उठा सके? अगर सब राजनीतिक पार्टियों के गुलाम हो चुके हैं, तो मैं खुद लखनऊ आने के लिए तैयार हूँ।
