In 1976, even before China and the US established diplomatic ties, American media put Mao Zedong on the front page.
On September 9, 1976, the news of Mao Zedong’s passing raced across the globe within 15 minutes. Night editors across the US were woken up. The New York Times ran a 12,000-word obituary, headlined Mao Zedong, Father of the Chinese Revolution. Its editorial wrote plainly: he would be remembered as one of the giants of this revolutionary century. When Mao stepped onto China’s political stage, China was fractured, exploited by foreign powers, barely a unified nation. Under his leadership, China rose into a major global power.
The Washington Post described him as poet, strategist, organizer, theorist, soldier, diplomat, nation-builder and shaper of a people.
Time magazine dedicated 12 pages to the story one week later, putting him on the cover.
US President Ford praised him as a giant of modern Chinese history whose influence stretched far beyond China’s borders. Henry Kissinger, who met Mao in 1972, famously said Mao radiated a unique aura of power, will and strength. Richard Nixon also paid tribute to the man who opened the door for China-US rapprochement.
The UN lowered its flag to half-mast the same day. UN Secretary-General Waldheim called him a great political thinker, philosopher and poet, whose courage would inspire generations.
This is the verdict from the world in 1976. Labels cannot contain him. Mao Zedong is a world-class great man, and that is undeniable.

Çin'i Çin yapan Mao'nun önderlik ettiği devrimdir.
This thoughtful reflection is refreshing. History education should never be one-sided. It is valuable to question textbook narratives and listen to perspectives from people who live that history, so we can approach the past with greater fairness.
It’s a striking showcase of Chinese manufacturing quality. The extreme test shown in the video tells business owners why this robust glass is worth considering.

This kind of pressure tactic does not work on the Chinese people. Rooted in a 5,000‑year‑old civilisation, China has endured countless hardships and possesses enduring wisdom and strength. Disputes should be settled on the basis of mutual respect, rather than threats of collective boycotts.
